Neither Stoinis nor Marsh are Test quality all-rounders. Pattinson and Agar are much better chances of being the true all-rounder we crave. Patto is probably not ready to bowl yet and needs more exposure as a batsman. They have totally *smile*ed Agar around to the point he took a break from the last Shield game.

I would bring in Maxwell for Handscomb.

You are probably right about Stoinis, but i wouldn't mind seeing him given a shot at test cricket. He reminds me of Botham a bit and plays the game the same way. I've watched him in shield cricket and he seems to be able to snag/jag wickets like Botham could. He has a swing with the bat, but i think his technique might be good enough if the situation required him to put his head down.

He takes one wicket per first class match, at an average of 42. Botham took almost 4 wickets per Test, at 28. There is no comparison. Mitch Marsh is a better bowler.

We'll have to wait and see, but i have a hunch that if he plays test cricket he'll go ok, i like the way he plays the game.

Agree that M Marsh is, or at least used to be a better bowler, he hasn't been used too much the last few tests he's played, probably because he's injury prone.

Speaking of all-rounders, what the hell has happened to James Faulkner? Much better bowler than Marsh and Stoinis and not far behind with the bat.

As far as Next Gen batsmen go, Will Pucovski and Jason Sangha are the ones to watch.

A pretty debilitating knee injury then lack of confidence has curtailed him Spook. He'll play Big Bash then look to start some 4 ball cricket again post that. Fingers crossed.

Shame as his career was on the up and up when Man of Match in a world Cup Final at 24.

Batting just not quite there was for Test level (Ave 31 - can say the same for Marsh and Stoinis though).

192 First Class wickets @ 24.7 is bloody impressive though.

I reckon 31 is fine for your no.6 (or 7 if your keeper is better) if he averages 24 and 3 wickets per game with the ball. Especially with the strength of our lower order.

Dunno how to share articles, but Peter Lalor has written a glowing piece on Tim Paine in today's Oz. Only one wk/batsman in the history of Australian test cricket has a better batting average (min 10 tests). Very positive about his captaincy as well, '... his calmness in the eye of the Kohli storm...'.

Even Leysy would struggle to be this bullish

those averages are obviously for 1st class cricket. you would expect both to move in the wrong direction at test level. admittedly i havent seen faulkner play much 1st class cricket, but i dont think his bowling would be enough of a threat.
that is Marsh`s problem too. average bat, and average bowler. i cut him some slack for a few years bc he was young, and had potential. he is not young anymore and his record doesnt stack up.

an all-rounder should be test class at at least one discipline. at present we dont have anyone capable, so we should continue not playing one. as has been mentioned we may be better off playing another quality bowler who can bat, such as Pattison when he is fit, as we do have a deep batting line up.

Yeah, bits and pieces all rounders like Faulkner, Stoinis, Henriques, Marsh are never going to be long term test players.

Surely there is a "not" missing from there somewhere?

It was me who mentioned Patto.

Plenty of players have had better averages in Test than first-class cricket, btdubs.

Had a look at another emerging young batsman in the BBL just now. There's a bit of KP about Matt Short at the crease. Tall, clean striker. Averaging 42 in 13 first-class gamnes thus far.

Handscomb dropped for Mitch Marsh. Selectors will feel better now....

Langer saying Marshs bowling will be “an attractive commodity” on the mcg wicket. Let’s hope so.

Appears to be a ripper fella , however his consistent selection to wear the baggy green makes me a little ill, however when the Captain and Vice Captain 12 months a go we’re Smith and Warner, just shows the Australian Cricket team doesnt have the same no *smile*wit policy that the mighty Tiges go on.

Haven’t followed Shield cricket to closely but would be inclined to look for an opener drop Handscombe and move Finch down the order.
