Tim Paine's character can't be questioned, but his captaincy certainly can be. If you send the oppo in and they make 300, it's a massive fail. Regardless, it was a defensive move, and a dumb one, considering the stats on England batting second, and the fatigue his key bowlers were clearly feeling. Cummins should have had an extra day and a half to put his feet up.

Marsh proved his was a good selection. Last night was the best I've seen him bowl, good pace, great control and consistent swing. As Warnie said, don't think they needed Sids as well, and Starc can consider himself stiff.

We'll have to finish them off quickly and then bat very well - 400+, or we're in trouble. All good to retain the Ashes, but if we don't win the series that's a poor result considering our dominance.

Surely it’s not just paines decision and langer had a big input?
Whatever was a dumb decision, on 80% of tosses you win you bat, the other 20 you think about it then bat.

Warner another failure. Shouldn’t be playing, it’s beyond a joke.

And now Harris, some of these batsmen just need this series to hurry up and finish.

Sheesh that’s a fragile batting top 5 (not including Labuschagne and Smith) : Harris, Warner, Wade, Marsh, Paine.

Surely one of them has to stand up.

It’s far from the greatest side we’ve ever sent to England, in saying that wouldn’t take much to beat that England side, has to be close to their worst ever.

not a great side for sure, but not in the top 10 worst ever. Remember those years, maybe even 10, when Darren Gough was their only half decent player.

Think we are all underestimating the quality of the bowling in this series. It has been absolutely world class on wickets with assistance. Only Smith, Stokes and Labuschane have come out with reputations intact.

Agree Paine should have batted, but we had enough chances to roll them for sub 200.

Reckon he did it to set Smithy a challenge chasing a score and relieve his boredom ha.

Well, we just handed ascendency back to England with yet another insipid innings with the bat with yet again only Smith and Labuschagne doing something (and a tail wag from Lyon and Siddle).

Fair dinkum I don’t know how some of these guys can look Smith in the eye.

Warner, 84 runs @ 9
Harris 49 @ 9
Wade 230 @ 25 (or more reflectively 120 @ 8 with out his ton)
Paine 159 @ 19

As well as previously, Bancroft 46 @ 11
Khawaja 122 @ 20

Beggars belief. As bad as Cotchin's kick against the wind call. There is not one argument that supports bowling first.

Only thing in Paine's defence is that it's traditionally a chaser's wicket. Spinners have been sparingly used and when it does start to turn, it's usually slow turn.

This might be one of those occasions where 300 is gettable, even with our lineup. Just need to roll them for 200-odd...

Well they already have a lead of 78, so even if they eke out 200 more runs we have to chase 278, sorry, Smith has to chase 278.
