Footy media , love’m or hate’ m ?

Odds are on.
How long before they come after us if we start dropping games.
*They looked disinterested the minute the season restarted. 'Lyon'
*when players pull out of going into the hubs, cracks were appearing then. "Parrott'
*How seriously were the players invested after being at the top for the last 3 years? 'King'
"Is Cotchin healthy enough to take them back to the top?" Robbo/Cornes
"Does there game style stack up to Brisbane's?' Lloyd.
"Without the crowds, they're toothless' Hutchinson
"No fixture didn't help them' Cornes
"Is Jack good enough to go on?" Brown.

Jonesy, Brisbane were on the G in round 1in perfect conditions and the old codger's slapped them.
There's so many fake sides its ridiculous.
If we were in september 2017 form,
God help the opposition.
We would win the flag by 20 goals.

Brisbane are pissing me off. All of sudden old codger thinks he is a super coach. Im sorry to say but I'm going for Geelong on thurzdey night.
What happen to big bad busling Dixon this week? He is the shittest full forward ive seen. Reminds me the duds Sheedy would recruit O'Conner, Cummings, Barnard etc
I actually forgot about rd 1 as it seems like yrs ago. But ur right, they have yet to be challenged & Port fell over at the 1st sight of a decent side.
The good thing for us is we are starting to get our game looking like us at our best & the media are far too self indulged to notice let alone point it out to our opposition.
Just on the 'ol codgers after they beat us in rd 3 thier fans carried on like they'd won the flag but are suddenly very silent now they are back out of the 8. it's delicious

Exactly Zips.

Gee Brisbane & their coach s##t me too.
Media kep talking them up. How if they kicked straight in the final against us who knows is the line they keep saying......

Its like saying if the Pies had beaten GWS they would have beaten us in the GF.

In the words of Zips'we would have slapped them too'.
100% on that last sentence. That PF was brutal & whoever got through was there for the taking. Cats fans know it too & they were a half of Footy from cashing in on it & it keeps them up at night.

Not really with the media. They have turned, when they mention Brisbane the first thing they bring up is the 6-0 6-0 exit last year.
I noticed that nearly every one that spoke of Brisbane last night, included the word "but" in there summary.
They aren't sure.

The best piece last night was OTC,
When they brought up Kelly.
Statements were flying around.
*Is he the cherry on the cake?
*does the team need to play well for him to play well?
*Is he capable of lifting when the team isn't firing?
*people forget, Geelong did finish on top last year.

Geelong are singing. Recruiting Kelly is equivalent to us giving away a first rounder for Pickett.
This is what annoys me about the media's obsession with the "Clarkson is a genius" narrative. since '15 they have gone str8 sets exit, missed finals, str8 sets & missed Finals. That is nearing Geelong territory.

Since we first made finals 7 years ago under Hardwick, there's been a clear top 5 clubs who stand head and shoulders above the rest:

Geelong
Hawthorn
Sydney
Richmond
West Coast

Then there's a pretty large gap until Adelaide, Port Adelaide, and Collingwood.

GWS only won 13 games last year and have never consistently been a top 4 football club in the past, and again they're not a top 4 club so far in 2020. They're a nothing club with no resources. Not a probable threat for mine. The draft pick hype is dead and that's all they had.

Collingwood enjoyed a boost to their performance by photocopying us after 2017 before Brisbane and others jumped onboard a year later. Unworthy clubs do sometimes win premiership (look at the Dogs), so they are a threat, but they're only a threat out of envy for how good we are.

I don't pay attention to WC. All I know about them is their coach is full of excuses like Brad Scott. In a pandemic, his excuses will be helpful to explain their poor start to the season, so the players will buy into it. So I think you're right, they could become a threat later in the year.

Brisbane and Geelong are both threats though IMO.

There has been a clear boost in performance to every club that copies our gameplan philosophy or relaxed attitude, and Brisbane have done both. But unlike Collingwood, they actually have a coach who isn't a total brick, so it's more genuine.

Brisbane also have the AFL's total praise behind them for Queensland's 2020 TV viewership shooting up like an Essendon player in a backyard shed. They were full of excuses before/after finals last year, which tells me they ramped up internal pressure for the finals and deviated from what works, which means they don't fully get the calm mindfulness stuff they seem to be copying and under pressure they revert back to more traditional methods that make it harder for their players. However, going out in straight sets last year means a finals win this year could basically fix that problem. From 2 attempts, a finals win could mean they'll be a young team who just proved their inner demons wrong, with the AFL's full support behind them, and every player is absolutely full of belief with no fear just 2-3 weeks before the Grand Final... so they've got the narrative, the gameplan, the AFL's evil tenticles at work, and the absence of a douchey coach. This makes Brisbane our number 1 threat IMO.

Ken Hinkley is capable of pulling off the caring stuff, but every year he screws it up with negativity when things go bad. I expect Port to collapse after a bad loss, or after the SA media returns to their normal later in the year, whichever comes first. There's just no reason for them to actually end up being better than every other team after all their years of consistent mediocrity.

In 2017, Richmond asked ourselves "Why not us?"... but in contrast, Port will be steering well clear of that question.

Now Geelong... Geelong have the most H&A wins over the past 7-8 years, so they've convinced themselves they're by far the best team in that time. They believe they're fully entitled to their reward. Of course, they're delusional. However, pigheaded self-centred beliefs can be a dangerous thing. The shorter matches + shorter season will help their older players get through the year in good shape. On paper they're still a threat, but at the end of the day they'll need more than a great ruck coach to get through the thickest head in football.

So at this stage I've got my eye on Brisbane, then Collingwood, and then Geelong... but more than that, for 2020 I'm expecting the unexpected.
I'll be convinced on Bris once i see some wins away from the Gabba & against some decent in form sides, not at all worried about Port they fell over simply by looking at a decent side. cats are only good pre Finals & Pies have issues to deal with but are a threat. Eagles will turn thier season around & GWS are a threat if you don't put pressure on them, it's well proven if u put some heat on them they don't always stand up to it.

These are all attempts to grab a headline IMO.
Does our game style stack up to Brisbane's? They haven't beaten us anywhere for over a decade now so i'd say yes it does.
As far as the media reporting on us is going it's starting to resemble early '19

Not sure if it belongs in this thread because ABC actually have decent writers/reporters, but an interesting piece. It's a lot longer if you want to click-through for the entire article.

What if broadcasters are the source of the AFL's image problem?

Two weeks ago, Hawthorn's Alastair Clarkson called a game of football he'd just coached a "terrible spectacle", and asked "what's happened to our game?".

Former North Melbourne champion turned Fox Sports analyst David King was even more alarmed: "Let's get our game back."

Such crisis talk is now an annual feature of the game's media cycle — often a multi-week festival of soul-searching and self-loathing.

But Clarkson and King were merely expressing a widely held belief: in the last 20 years, the aesthetic of AFL football has changed markedly and maybe irreversibly.

We're not going back to end-to-end goal fests, when Clarkson's coaching predecessors like Ron Barassi commanded their men to kick "long bombs to Snake".

The prevailing view of fans and pundits in recent times is that AFL coaches, their heads full of imported theories and self-serving tactics, have become overwhelmingly negative and ruined the game's visual appeal, and that administrators, bumbling and reactionary, have failed to keep them in line.

But what if there is an alternative explanation for modern footy's so-called ugliness, and it's been staring us in the face since COVID-19 closed football stadiums off to fans?

What if AFL football's problem is not the football itself, but the way it is filmed and broadcast? What if we're literally looking at AFL action from the wrong angle?

Scarcely acknowledged in these discussions is the widening gap of understanding that has opened up between those intimately involved in the game at club level — the coaches, assistants and analysts who have access to every available piece of footage filmed on game day — and the average fan and even journalists, who, if they're not sitting in the stands, are entirely reliant on what's shown by the Seven Network and Fox Sports.

This week, under the condition of anonymity, I asked AFL coaches and team analysts a simple question: would they be able to understand a game of modern AFL football from the television broadcast alone?

Their blunt answers of "no" gave way to detailed observations that painted a picture of AFL broadcasting as something closer to a coaching fraternity in-joke.

The outline of grievances is simple enough:

  • The tactical battle can now only be truly understood with vision from behind the goals, an angle from which the home viewer rarely sees anything other than replays of goals or reportable incidents
  • How a team sets up at a stoppage is crucial to the outcome of the contest but a total mystery on TV
  • There are too many lingering close-ups that serve no purpose other than to familiarise viewers with players' haircuts and tattoos, and obscure what is really happening in the game
  • When the game slows down and the ball carrier is launching a transition of play, home viewers rarely, if ever, see the options available to him
  • Some of these gaps in knowledge could be overcome if commentators explained tactical scenarios or anticipated the decision-making of players, but they rarely offer anything other than a description of what has already occurred.

That is an excellent article.

The fact they haven't changed the way they broadcast footy in terms of camera angles and the like since the 1950s is a travesty. You go to the game you see the way teams set up. It was one of the most obvious things I could see in the first half of the 2019 PF, Geelong were setting up so well for the way we play. You would have seen none of that on the TV.

Just a few wide shots and a bit of intelligent explaning from the commentators (yeah, I know, they would need to find commentators with IQs higher than their shoe size) would do. They focus on all sorts of crap when they could be showing how teams are getting set up at the bounce and at various stoppages. It isn't like they don't have time to do this given how long it takes umpires to throw the ball up at a stoppage these days.

They could also show the behind the goals footage after a goal is kicked and even occasionally as the play is happening.

Dermie managed to drag up the Cotchin-Shiel incident again, talking about the hits this week. They'll never let that go.

Lloyd is very hesitant to bag us.
At least to when we play Essendon.
Tonight on Footy Classified, they weren't even talking about us.
The dumbshit Cornes, said 'Lloydy didn't you say a couple of weeks ago GC are closer to a flag then Richmond?"
Lloyd was straight on the back foot and said "No, Richmond are still in it this year"
End.
A minute late Caro mentions we are most likely playing Essendon in a Dreamtime game in Darwin in round 9 or 10.
Then lloyd said Essendon could be 6-1 with a game in hand.
I thought he played for Essendon, did he forget all those years of being 8-3 or 7-4 and then losing the next 6 and plummeting out of the 8?
Seriously i need to stop watching these shows.

I quit smoking 1212 days ago never had another.

I quit footy shows this year once it was all RS.

I'm a bigger chance of lighting up a dart this year than I am of switching any of that that inane drivel on.

I'm pretty much done with all of it this year, this faux season also.

Put this in the bank.
Lloyd is waiting for the dreamtime game before he unleashes on us.
Currently he won't say anything negative.
Just wait if Essendon beats us.

The cockroach Cornes is on a fat that port are killing it, pity they will cop the same result Brisbane copped last year.
Is there a bigger front runner team then port?
That's one team i couldn't bear to see win it.
Im virtually going for WC to win it if we cant because i hate Collingwood, Brisbane, Geelong and especially Port.
Imagine GWS beating Collingwood in a GF.
That would make this year ok .

Looking at who they have played it's set up to happen again. Pies are only decent side they have played after 6 games. It'll get much tougher for them from here.

I'd add port to he list of "played nobody" that Ess are on.
Imagine us beating Copywood or Geesook in the GF. Now THAT would make it a great year!

They will drop games against shitt sides its in there DNA.
Im not sure why they're clapping and singing that they have a game in hand. Melbourne seem to slap them regardless where they're on the ladder.
