Footy to Return

I reckon it is a moot point anyway given the issues with a hub, just not practical.

Also, got over the no crowd games very quickly.

I understand the AFL needs to get some revenue in and a lot of livelihoods depend on this but I'll say again that the AFL can borrow money at low interest rates and pay it off over a long period of time.

While we're at it: don't shorten the bloody game, leave well enough alone.

There are so many wannabees wanting to change the game it aint funny. The AFL is a great product compared to soccer & both rugby codes. 100 minutes of footy no matter where you are (The Gee, Dunolly, Moe, The Alice, Broken Hill,Oodnadatta, Burnie ,Mt Isa )Pre game time to socialise with family ,friends etc etc. . Quarter time , half time, three quarter time revenue time for the caterers, bar venues. The public love it. The Shockers, panelists, the has beens want to destroy it. We had one round of 16 minutes a quarter & the previously mentioned all loved it but they have not asked the public if they loved it. Players loved it (as they had a deduction in working hours). Time for some one with balls to say "this is the game ,play it ".

I could accept some changes for this year if it meant we could have a reasonable season. I could accept shorter quarters, bigger interchange bench, unlimited interchange, and 5 day breaks. But only for this year.

If we were to get back to something like normal for next year, put it all back how it was.

Players current contracts would not include this relocation clause in their contracts so I am of the opinion players do not have to play if they do not want to . I would say a huge majority of players will have to play because of mortgages, hire purchases etc etc so it will interesting to see if any fall by the wayside due to family separation.
I agree about some "will have to play". The more interesting will be the ones who don't and whether that will lead to public shaming.

Interesting to see Footy Classified and how they're all gung ho for the hub idea, noting that none of these people will be forced into isolation.
Asked about Pendles, McGuire said that he was eager to go. A better one would be Grundy. Does Eddie think it is okay for Grundy to leave his girlfriend in the middle of the pandemic to go play footy cos she certainly can't go (https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl...ort-act-to-the-real-hero-20200403-p54gpw.html) and he's not home to support her emotionally.

In Jack's case I can see why he wouldn't want to go, with a baby at home and a nursing partner needing both his support and her regular medical support. "See you honey, I'm off to a footy camp for a couple of months. Best of luck with the bub."

The example of the cricketers is totally unrealistic. The cricketers families go on tour with them and the wives go out shopping and sightseeing as a group when they want. No chance of that in a hub with social distancing and retail and tourist shutdowns. "Come to the camp love. While I'm training you can sit in a motel room for a few hours."

If this season was to resume this year I would be very surprised.

Even if it does, it would appear it would bear little resemblance to the game we know and love.

Best to forget this season and start anew in 2021, with little or no change in rules or game changes.

Then again money rules, and the AFL will be almighty keen to get some revenue from some sort of bastard type game.

Less players, less time in quarters, no crowds and god knows what else.

To be honest the players need to GAGF on all of this.

They've been nothing but a spoilt, self-indulged, out of touch bunch of wankers throughout this entire process, the ones we have heard from publicly anyway.

When you opt for a career in professional sport it is sacrifice and reward. Everyone in the various industries make sacrifices, whether it is lifestyle, the times and hours they work, the scrutiny, the travel, the physical demands or the mental pressures.

Countering that is the rewards, which are huge; financially, in contra, in fame, in opportunity and in work/life balance.

For the players to complain about the prospect of being in hubs is truly pathetic. We will miss our families for a few months.

Well boo hoo, ask an Australian cricketer or pro golfer or tennis player about that. And then think about how many people in the industry are stuffed at the moment and how getting some footy on will be the difference between them managing or having their lives in ruins.

Think about all the people out of work in all this who would give their right nut for a chance to work, not be sooking about a short stay away from family.

The indulgence of AFL players has long been accepted in things like the 'go home' factor, people never seem to question why a grown man needs to run back home to mummy and daddy after a few years working away. I've moved three times to three states in 10 years for employment reasons, taking kids each time. Welcome to life.

What the players need to do is shut up, listen to what they are told and get out and play footy, in any form as soon as they can.
Very ordinary post
Why
It’s only a sport champ
RFC is based on family , honestly and values
Riewoldt, Cotchin , Houli won’t be the playing in this “ Mickey Mouse “ comp
The 3 players above value family amongst everything else
Other players have partners they live with etc
To call them “ wankers “ is unbelievable

so if Jack's switched off from his job completely, shouldn't he be taking a 100% pay cut?

I love Jack and the heart pumping away on his sleeve,

but that is a seriously dumb thing to say, if he said it.

saw a clip of Danny training solo. I didn't recognise him. Seemed to have lost the designer mullet

and looked as fit as a trout. a big solid trout.

and im firmly with @The Big Richo on this one.

the notion that $200k isn't worth 8 weeks away from the kids is a joke (I wouldnt even have time to write a note Id be out the door so quick) akin to Dangerfield needing to be closer to his mums lamb roast.

* NEWSFLASH * childhood lasts heaps longer than 8 weeks. These days, they are toddlers for 2 decades.

How long was Marlion in Melbourne on *smile* all $$ before his wife and kids came over?

Nothin' Soft about him.

I think players should be given the option of leave without pay. But

Zero chance our Captain stays home with the kids.

If he did, I would dislocate a finger dialing the RFC for a refund of my memberships

Just hope the AFL hurries up & makes a decision.
The clubs & their members deserve better than being kept in limbo wondering about what shape or form things might take at some point in the future....

I trust everyone objecting to the poor players having to be away from their families for a month or two will be demanding significant changes to our drafting policy when footy resumes. The barbaric practice of taking an 18 year old away from their families and having them move interstate to play football must stop. We surely must only draft players who live within 100km of Punt Road from now on.

Ridiculous comparison.
We're in the middle of a pandemic. Baloo's post a page back re quarantine summed up why it won't work.

On a purely selfish level I want the game to resume, because that means I can go back to work.

That being said, community safety should be held as a way higher priority. Not sure if hubs are the answer, but I think everybody attached to the game from players to staff to fans needs to be prepared that the impact will be felt next year/season as well

The problem here is that we just can't trust the AFL not to screw up the game and keep silly changes.

I'd accept changes for this year only to get a season happening, but only with a cast iron guarantee that things return to normal in 2021 in regards the rules. Trouble is the AFL wouldn't know how to give a cast iron guarantee so no chance really.

Also, they can only play without crowds for so long, I would say max 4 rounds (and that is pushing it to the extreme), more than that and it just looks and feels like pre-season or practice matches. Without the crowds it is just a game of suburban footy not the elite level game.

Given the situation with social isolation, given previous pandemics have seen a wave of outbreaks (see 1918 flu, more died in the second outbreak in Australia), I just cannot see how this is viable from a health perspective; let alone the practicalities of playing a modified game in a modified season in a location who knows where. All too farcical for me.

and let's be honest abouty why the AFL are trying anything to get games going. While they may spruik about it being for the fans, how footy will uplift everyone, how it's needed because the game is at our core, that's all why down the list of real reason. The only reason they are pushing this is to get money from their broadcast partners.

No chance at all. They are using this as a catalyst to change the game. They're not even being secretive about it.

I don't really see that as a bad thing. Do any of us want to see the game worse off in 5 years or 10 years time because of this?

Never said it was a bad thing. But they're trying to sell it as they're doing it for the people, the masses, for the good of society. That's not the main driver at all.

Jack, Bachar, Cotch all with young children, Shedda just announced his partner expecting their first child in August, Grimes has a business to run ... and that's without knowing the off field situation of the rest of the team.

Some tough decisions for these guys if the hub is implemented.
