How dodgy are the other 8 SANFL grounds if Norwood is best after AO?
Robbo must have been following Gather Round on the radio. In his column he praised up Boltons game saying he brought his wizardry to the Adelaide Hills.
On a whole, the SANFL grounds seem generally pretty good. Obviously older and out of date compared to what 21st century over-pampered players and fans are used to for AFL footy, but arguably better venues than those of the VFL (VFA).
I think Norwood is just selected because it has kind of iconic old school sort of status. And hence, has quirky dimensions. Reminds me a bit of the status of North Sydney Oval. Also a beautiful old quirky ground. Norwood probably has the largest portion of its capacity as seated in the SANFL, which may come into it’s selection.
Thebarton also looks a beautiful old dame (former home of West Torrens). Looks a better sized and shaped ground than Norwood too. Perhaps that would be a better option for an AFL match.
I'm pretty sure Norwood also has some of the better clubrooms/facilities than a lot of the other SANFL grounds which would influence the decision

I was thinking about it while watching the Norwood Oval game on TV. If Sydney was to host gather round in a future edition. Would love to see North Sydney Oval feature. In the early 00’s, while living in Sydney, I went along to a preseason match the Swans hosted there against Essendon. And they do that semi-regularly. In truth though, probably a touch small a playing surface. Not sure it would pass. But then, if Norwood does……

That is correct as I understand it. Although Thebarton I believe also relatively good on that front. Hence why a lot of Crows AFLW games played there (and some AFL Crows preseason).

Nick Vlastuin, Richmond, has been charged with rough conduct against St Kilda's Dan Butler during the third quarter of the Round 4 match between Richmond and St Kilda played at Norwood Oval on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
The incident was graded as careless conduct, low impact and high contact.
The incident was classified as a $3750 sanction as a first offence.
Vlastuin can accept a $2500 sanction with an early plea, and will be free to play against West Coast this Sunday afternoon.
Yes I agree on the extra tall, that being Ryan, not Naismith, as he is a more like for like for Balta in that he can play forward or ruck and is the potential future. Naismith and Nanks can't play as forwards and I believe Naismith was only recruited in case Nanks is injured, not as a replacement forward. 3 career goals would support that.
Agree with all that. Also the location would be a big factor. Being so near to town, the The Parade, the cafes, pubs & restaurants, then the in the (resurrected) Norwood Food & Wine Festival.
I think it was (on balance) a winner. I just wish the oval was better proportioned for the requirements of modern AFL.
I saw worse tackles than Vlastuin. Shouldn’t even have been paid a free kick imho. Thought Butler had his arms free and should’ve broken his fall with free arm. We were denied a free for a similar tackle when our player had both arm pinged to his body and his head hit the ground. No consistency is killing it for me.

At some stage you would think Perth gets to host Gather round. And for similar reasons, surely Fremantle Oval (home of South Fremantle) gets to host games.Agree with all that. Sure, Greater Perth has marvellous (yet sterile) new state league level facilities at both Joondalup and Mandurah. But something romantic added by utilising at least one of these older retro grounds. Especially with the vibrancy of the surrounding area, as opposed to the sterile nature of new purpose built facilities surrounded by LEGO land housing developments. Perhaps, Optus Stadium, Fremantle Oval and either Joondalup or Mandurah as your third venue.
Same as if Sydney was to host. Would rather see North Sydney Oval host (if it could be made to work - does host Swans preseason) than the purpose built facility at Blacktown. So SCG, Sydney Showground (Giants) and North Sydney Oval as your three venues would work.

Sydney won't host Reacher Round, at least not for a long time. No way you'd sell out nine games or anything close to it. It's Adelaide's for the foreseeable future, with only Perth and perhaps a one-off Tassie welcome as alternatives.
And for the record it does seem a pretty cool concept even if they copied the NRL. I'd love to make a trip of it one of these years.

If the new stadium were built in Hobart, Tasmania for sure would be a realistic possibility.
3 venues - new Hobart stadium, York Park in Launceston and either Dial Park, Penguin or Devonport Oval on the north west coast
Would love to say West Park in Burnie, as it is the historically more famous and iconic Aussie Rules football ground in that north west region. And possibly has slightly better facilities than Devonport. But the playing arena is just too odd and small, even compared to somewhere like Norwood Oval.
Certainly though, I think Perth will likely be the next port of call however, if it does indeed move on from Adelaide at the conclusion of the current contract.
