Jayden Short

Great kick and great rebounder, but very ordinary at the contest or in one on one's.
Stands out because everyone around him are guns.

Am I wrong in thinking that when push comes to shove he represents yet another tiger that other clubs wouldn't trade for. They might snap him up if he was going cheap but wouldn't go out of their way to shed good picks for.

For mine he's a keeper. Main reason is the massive rate of improvement..

I absolutely love his clean hands & laser like disposal.

That kick of his is elite. It is fast, penetrating & accurate. True weapon.

Defensive skills can be learned. Gut running will come with pre seasons but the skill levels he has are much harder to teach & find.
Also a tremendous fella. I understand sometimes you gotta give stuff to get stuff but I really hope he stays.
I'm a fan.

He's 22yo played 46 games and was drafted #11 in the 2014 rookie draft. If he keeps improving and playing solid footy who knows but no I wouldn't expect teams to be pleading with fistful of high draft picks to get him.

One poster quite rightly noticed that he doesn't have a tank yet to match his abilities. As he positions better and gets more into the game the speed and endurance demands are showing his current limits. Short needs the Houli tank to fulfil his potential. Maybe it a Sampson/Delilah thing and all Short really needs to properly emulate Houli is fundamentally a good beard. Or rather than the fundamental look he can go for the St Nick bushranger style. All good. :old

Shorty reminds me very much of early Grigga n Bash. Not the physical hard nut defender, he's the running link n distribute player. Both Grigga n Bash have been very good reliable second tier players for us throughout their careers n Shorty is tracking very similar,'cept he's a better kick than both of them.
Won't be elite but I reckon he'll be more than just good.

I really like what Shorty adds to our team. His ball movement and dare out of the backline is very important and creates alternative scoring options for us, ie. scoring from our back half rather than relying on scoring from turnover.

Just as guide, snakey and spook, who do you think are the best rebounding small defenders in the comp?

Laird is an absolute star IMO. The benchmark.

I would agree Laird is the best. Probably supported by Hibberd and Lloyd. Shorty at the same age is probably a touch off Laird, but at least matching the other 2. Tracking along nicely.

I reckon Lloyd's the mould for Short. Hasn't got the ball winning of Laird or the defensive ability of Hibberd.

We've been without Prestia for 2/3's of the season, Rioli for all but two games, Houli for nearly half the season, but we are a better side. I think Shorty should get a little bit of credit for that.

Yabby Jeans loved to talk abut The Three Phases Of The Game: We Have It, They Have It, or It's In Dispute. Short is good at the first phase and in the other two is totally carried by far and away the best defence we've seen in yellow and black. If people think that's a jet immune to criticism, or that I'm nitpicking by pointing out he is a liability in 2/3 phases in the game, that's up to them I guess. To me he is a limited player doing his darnedest, but still the weakest link in the chain. There is no one in the side I would less like to see isolated in D50 with the match on the line.

It's funny that you aren't critical of a few others that don't necessarily excel at too many of the phases.

If Yabby was coaching now there might be a 4th phase, "it's in space" which appears to be the only phase KMac is any good at.

Two others who are very good are both out with ACLS in Brodie Smith and Docherty.

Lloys pretty good also.

He might be old, but jarred harbrow isn't a bad half back flanker. Collingwood were sniffing his jocks as he ran past them all night

B Mac is a big fan as well after watching the replay today. Gave him big wraps as possibly the most improved player in the league :spin
