Because Collingwood and West Coast were outspending everyone - including us, by a significant margin, when it cames to medical/sports science and recruiting. It was likely to end up with a two tiered competition where few clubs remain competitive.
I remember someone saying we had Greg, Frank and some part time volunteers whilst Collingwood had permanent staff in every state, and multiple to cover the TAC. They then had part timers cover gaps.
That all got pulled back into line some years ago when the AFL suits first introduced a maximum cap that clubs could spend. Then in typical AFL fashion the *smile* suits panicked n *smile* their pants when Covid hit so they ripped the arse out of the footy soft cap by about 25 to 30 %. Three years after Covid faded to flu the AFL suits have finally managed to raise the soft cap by maybe 5% which due to strong inflation over the prior three years means that clubs still have less footy dept cap to spend than they struggled with during the Covid years.
More n more money pumping in to AFLHQ every year but the reality is that due to their expanding social equalisation agenda the game and the comp are stagnating to a beige miasma of mediocrity.
Every kiddie gets to play nicely with every other kiddie n we all get a fancy ribbon n marketing approved health drink at the end of the day.

Yep going from 3 to 4 umpires means afl should be providing mental health services for the fans. Instead we now have dr. Nick running our medical team.

They probably should soft cap head coach separately to the everything else. That’s what would drive huge differences I’d imagine.

You can't make this *smile* up, just terrible. Gotta feel for Juddy Clarke.

Richmond believes Judson Clarke tore his ACL after he returned to the ground in the VFL. He had come back onto the field with knee heavily strapped yet with ACL intact after testing. He then tore it, presumably as he slipped kicking a long goal.

We need to know who made this decision.

Lost Rob Inness to Sydney cause we cut back on costs during covid but made sure Dimma was getting most of the doe.
So you implore we go after the best,Isn't that exactly what Sydney did?
You think we should've went cheap on a 3x premiership coach?

Maybe we couldnt make this *smile* up, but Jon Ralph could. It might be true, but personally i would wait for other sauces before getting to worked up.

With cuts due to corvid you keep your team together especially strength and conditioning who keep the players on the ground. If we paid his worth he stays simple.

Who said cheap? your words not mine. Dimma is all about himself well that's now been proven but coaches from what we heard took pay cuts to keep most highly credentialed staff on the payroll.

Anyway, not happy we didn't search far and wide and we promoted the 3rd in line Meehan and now we are paying the price.

Yeah nah why does he need to make it up no doubt Jon Ralph spoke to people within the club with his connections. To worked up the kid is out for a year cause the club put him back out there.

Most of us were watching the game saw Clarke hobble off and they bandaged him up and went back out there. He then had his shot at goal slipped and grabbed his leg and couldn't even walk. The law of averages says he did it at that time.

The AFL have used the soft cap reduction to give the expansion clubs a boost. GWS and GCS have always had an abundance of talent but could never compete with wealthier clubs on football spending. Now with the reduced cap, every club is spending roughly the same in their football departments and advantage must be sought from elsewhere. The northern clubs have just such an advantage and it’s structural. The almost limitless supply of talent from their academies.

I’d bet that HQ keeps a very tight reign on football department spending until the expansion clubs have won some silverware.

It should also be pointed out that the traditional clubs and certain Victorian clubs in particular gave HQ the justification to introduce the soft cap. Collingwood’s trips to Arizona and Essendon’s little pharmaceutical benefits scheme were a bit excessive to say the least.

What a simplistic view.
Inness was 2nd in line to Burgs
He got an offer to be #1 at the Swans.
Its called promotion.
Had nothing to do with Dimma.

was it necessary to send Judson Clarke back out onto the field ?

if there is neglect, that's where it is. it's not like it was a Grand Final or the like ...

Interesting comments from Richo on 3AW tonight. Stated the most important football person at a club was the fitness and conditioning guy, not the coach, not the list manager, not the recruiter or football manager. I suspect Meehan will be axed at end of the season.

So what worries me is the snowball and/or carry over effect waiting until year's end to move guys on.
(Understand it is a financial issue as well with paying out these guys who have failed).
However if we let this continue right to the end we will have a host of guys hamstrung (see what I did) going into next year.
Therefore this could severely curtail next year if not derail it completely.

Need to act now, bring a noted person in and cop the financial burden, now.
Right now.

Only then can our systems/procedures/practices begin to change.

Chief?

This is the same knee he had issues with as a junior. I raised this back in 2021. This is also the same knee he injured in a VFL game in 2022. So, there is a history there.

That being the case, why the *** did we send him back out there especially with all the injuries that we already have, and a need for his type in the seniors ?

If we havent started one already, we need a complete review of what we are doing on the fitness, performance and medical management front. (And nobody has to be a "sports scientist" to grasp that.)
