Pick 63, 2017 Ben Miller - Welcome to Tigerland.

I'm happy the Club took him he couldn't be any worse than Elton that's for sure.

I like his agility. Not a lumberer.

That’s clearly our moto on true talls. Be mobile, able to ruck and cover the ground.

Turk’s right, if Hayes was there at pick 403 we still would’ve passed. Miller is a huge long shot to make the grade at pick 63 but he’s exactly the right type to punt on. I like that he models himself on Jarrod Roughead. He knows what he wants to be.

From the RFC website "Miller a Gold Prospect":

It’s fitting that Richmond recruit Ben Miller hails from the Western Australian gold-mining town of Kalgoorlie because the Tigers might just have struck gold with their late selection of him in the 2017 AFL national draft.

Miller, a tall utility, who was Richmond’s fifth and final pick – No. 63 overall – shapes as a draft bargain.

He played senior football with local Kalgoorlie team, Railways, at just 15 years of age, and has made significant progress since then.

In 2015, he was selected in the WA State under-16s Academy; the following year he made his debut with WAFL club Subiaco’s colts team.

And, throughout what was an extremely hectic 2017 season, Miller shone.

He managed to combine studying in his final school year in Kalgoorlie with playing local football there, as well as the constant lengthy travel to Perth to play for the Subiaco colts.

So impressive were his performances at colts level, he was chosen in the WA squad for the 2017 under-18 national championships.

Miller showcased his excellent athleticism and all-round ability during all four games at the carnival.

Playing as a ruckman/forward, he had the most hit-outs for WA, the fourth most tackles, the fifth most clearances and seventh most contested possessions.

He then finished the season superbly back in Kalgoorlie, as best-on-ground for Railways in their Goldfields Football League grand final victory.

At the post-season AFL draft combine, Miller finished equal first in the agility test, equal first in the goalkicking test (with a perfect score of 30 out of 30 shots for goal), and equal fourth in the 20-metre spring.

Subiaco colts coach Beau Wardman provided a good insight into Miller’s growth as a player and his potential.

“Ben’s development throughout 2017 has been huge,” Wardman said.

“He’s extremely dedicated, managing travel commitments with living in Kalgoorlie and often training in isolation.

“Ben has great athleticism for a big man, and he gave great service to his teammates through his improved ruckwork.

“He also showed he has the ability to turn a game, with his goal sense and overhead marking.

“Ben is a really impressive kid. He’s a confident, young man with great character and care for his peers.

“His willingness to learn, and then implement, is why he has been so successful this year, and only better things are on the horizon for him.”

Subiaco talent manager Michael Farmer was similarly positive about Miller’s football prospects.

“Ben showed great commitment this year with his commute from Kalgoorlie to Perth for training and games,” Farmer said.

“For his age and size, we think Ben is an elite prospect for the next level, who can really grow into a premier big man.

“Great skills and great athleticism for his size, he has the tools to make an impact at the next level.

“He is a tough, strong presence in the ruck, and presents well when forward. And his second, third and fourth efforts are outstanding for a big man.

I like the sound of second, third and fourth efforts, (almost Vickery like ;D)
There's either 20kg of mayo spread all over this story, or AFL recruiters are collectively *smile* imbeciles. Reading this article the kid should have been a top ten prospect not a fourth round after thought.
Seriously hoping all the other recruiters are imbeciles n we've snaffled a premium for chump change.

Love the back story of a resilient, focused young man who had to travel long distances just to play every week.

These kids aren't handed everything to them on a platter and often go on to display the work ethic required to make it in the AFL system.

Reminds me a bit of KMac's story.
Agree, these are the ready-made kids to bring to the club. Face-on he looks like a boxer whose taken a few already...good to see. Just the toughness and determination we need in our talls, in the mould of Nanks and so different to Elton and even Gourdis if you go back a bit.

It's possible the others have missed out on him & our guys weren't about to spread the word. players do "come on" despite being late picks. hopefully this time it's us that found the gold. at #63 it's we'll worth the punt.

Re: Ben "MACHINE GUN" Miller - Welcome to Tigerland.

He hasn't been in a full on junior program. Instead he had to train by himself in Kalgoorlie while he finished school. Despite this he played well for the local side plus got himself to Perth and played so well they had to pick him in the state side.

Since he is not in a full on junior program most recruiters over looked him and still didn't rate him when he tested well in speed and agility.

Given the way he has been self motivated and succeeded then every chance he will continue to improve in a full on elite training program.

Thinking we have scored another late draft pick gem.

This is what I like as well. I just hope he has a high footy IQ so that we can turn him into a player.

We seem to be making quite the art form out of picking up solid to premium quality late in the draft. Without even considering the resurrection of club changing players, we have the likes of Grimey Grub, Lamblett, Fridge Graham,Geezer, George, Broady, Shorty, Lloyd as well performed late picks. Still have potentials in Lego, Garth, Cholly hovering n now Miller time n Eggs have joined the line up. It seems the club is doing an extraordinary job with the chump change selections.

Yes I always believed that you needed to score some gems from the back end of the draft to win a premiership as you just can't rely on your top end draftees to build the depth you need - Sydney have been the classics at this over recent times.

Glad the Tigers have

Re: Ben "MACHINE GUN" Miller - Welcome to Tigerland.

Looking at this blokes clips I get the feeling he will develop nicely. Almost looks ready made now with the way he moves and his physique looks ready made to develop quite easily. No chook arms here.
Being in a professional environment full time with good coaching could be a boon for this fella.
Gut says we stole another one from the back end of the draft.

I agree, DDT. I'll back in the recruiters. But Greenberg is renowned for his rose-coloured glasses.

Re: Ben "MACHINE GUN" Miller - Welcome to Tigerland.

All i know is playing as a foward the things i used to hate were

Defenders - 5-10cm taller than me , But thats ok i can get him on the lead and am more agile and will be faster due to making the move first
Miller will be taller and faster than most KPF as well as being more agile.

Ruckman - They hate the opposition rucks getting away from them and collecting possessions or kicking goals, It feels like its directly against you and you need to get that back - Not many Rucks that are going to keep up with Mr.Miller and he looks like he loves a goal

Playing as a foward he will give the defenders something really to worry about with his tools he has, What this kid needs to do is just get into the best physical condition he possibly can and become bigger faster and stronger - Then he needs to implement the Townsend template and become the better townsend and Hurt people both Physically and with his football

Just think about that guys - We could have a New version of Jacob Townsend
10cm -12cm Taller
15kgs heavier
alot more faster
Extremely agile Beast
That can jump high and mark over you
