Pick 52 Richmond - Caleb Daniel (South Adelaide)
167cm, 68 kg
Forward / Midfielder

My love for midgets seems to be growing by the year and perhaps I'm even suffering from the incredible shrinking man syndrome, but I have the highest respect for Caleb Daniel and what he's managed to achieve this year. Coming back from a lengthy stint on the sidelines he pulled on his Croweater guernsey and produced the most memorable 3 games of football I can recall at the u/18 carnival. I'll start by going over his stats, he averaged 20 disposals, 5 tackles, 4 clearances, 2 goals and still managed to achieve that feat at the freakish DE of 92%. To top it off he registered 217 Champion Data points in round 5 which must be some sort of record for a midfielder at this event.

Now I'm not one to get too carried away with feats at the carnival, particularly when it involves sub 170cm players, but Daniel has taken this form all the way to SANFL seniors and has proven he won't be a pushover when playing against men. It's remarkable to think a 68kg lightweight can make an impact in senior football but Daniel has simply risen to every challenge thrown at him. Over the course of his 11 games he managed to average 17 possessions & 3 tackles, all done at 84% disposal efficiency, but more impressive was his finals campaign where he thrived under the intense pressure of cut throat football. In his first match against the Eagles he picked up 16 touches and hit the scoreboard with 2 majors, in week two he notched up 24 touches & 3 clearances, and in week three a further 20 disposals and 4 clearances. How is it possible for such a diminutive guy to produce such quality?

Having followed the career of Boomer Harvey it's clear to me that to make it at the highest level one has to have a flawless rap sheet. When it comes to Caleb Daniel I think he ticks off every key indicator. His aerobic fitness levels are on par with Billy Hartung so there will be absolutely no problem with running out games, his speed is good having run a 2.99sec/20 metre sprint and his agility is in the top 25%. There is of course the issue with weight but I feel with some careful management that Daniel can put on the required 5 kilos to truly become strong enough to compete with the bigger bodies.

Turning to his footballing ability, everything he does is bordering on silk. His handballing is elite and he rarely misses a target or picks a wrong option, his work this year would have made Diesel proud. His kicking is well above average and for a small guy he can kick long bombs from outside the 50 metre chalk. This is also complimented by his great spatial awareness, he is exceptionally adept at weighting his kicks to avoid oncoming traffic. As a true rover he also reads the play and can hit the packs at full pace, often using his agility to zig zag his way through enemy lines.

For some spending pick 52 is overs for a guy who has to confront the tide of history when it comes to being unconventionally short. He really only has Brent Harvey as a flag bearer and Boomer is a once in a generation player. But despite this I'm going to back him in to make the grade, he's only 3cm shorter than Jake Neade who recently played in a preliminary final so that gives me some sort of hope. Wherever he lands on draft day I'll be supporting him, it may only be as a rookie but provided he finds his way onto a list I'll be content in the knowledge that midgets still have a place in our great game.

Pick 53. Melbourne- Alex Urban

Weight: 78 kg

Came 3rd at the B&F for the TAC Cup in 2014. Finds a lot of football and has a big booming foot. Will find his feet at AFL level as a midfielder.

Caleb is 6cm's shorter than Rodan who I thought was too small. This kid has great football skills but he aint getting any taller.

He's the same height as Boomer Harvey, if you're good enough you're tall enough. Lewis Taylor is Rodan's height, I wouldn't consider him too short for AFL.

With pick #54, Fremantle select...

Jackson Nelson 187cm, 80kg, a defender/midfielder from Geelong Falcons.

Very fit player who averaged 22 touches in the TAC cup this year who will make the most of the big Freo homeground.

The Dockers recruiting staff are quite pleased so far with Duggan, Vickers-Willis & Nelson selected with their first 3 x picks.

All good types STK but they play the same role. Medium defenders. But I can see your thinking with Freo, they are ageing and don't have much run from the back half. Duggan is a good fit and could play for them in 2015.

Pick 55 Geelong : Josh Glenn Central Districts. 180cm classy left footer flanker. Mostly known for declining the 2013 AFL combine but we at Geelong think it shows a sign of maturity to know when your ready or not. With Glenn being 21 at the start of next season he's ready to go with a couple of seasons of SANFL footy behind him.

With North having a forward line full of experience but on the flip side one with ageing stars it looks to the future and at pick 56 chooses:

Brenton Payne

Position: Key forward
Height: 193 cm, Weight: 76 kg, DOB: 09/03/1996
Club: Western Jets

Brenton had a solid year for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup, bagging 18 goals whilst impressing at National Championship level, averaging one goal and 2.4 marks from 10 disposals. The elite endurance runner’s tank means he outworks and outlasts most defenders. Although light at just 76 kilograms, Payne is strong, loves to get into physical one-on-one scraps for the ball and has excellent closing speed, allowing him to burn his opponent off the mark. Defensively speaking, he’s accountable while also showing enough to suggest that he can be a versatile forward with his ability to clunk one-handed grabs: Payne averaged 5.6 marks per game at TAC Cup level this season. He has scope to become a handy swingman, with his defensive side also impressive.

Port want more weapons, more smarts in the front half. Robbie Gray will go into the midfield more and long term this guy could fill the void.

Pick 58. Sydney Swans - Jack Lonie (Dandenong Stingrays)
174cm, 67kg
Small Forward

Jack was the guy I was strongly considering picking with Richmond's third selection and in reality he's the player who I think we would select with pick 52. As far as a player comparison goes, he reminds me a lot of Haydn Ballantyne, he's exceptionally dangerous given his elite agility and quick reflexes, and he knows how to find the goals. At the u/18 carnival he was Vic Country's MVP and finished the 6 games averaging 14 possessions & 1.5 goals a match. His TAC numbers were just as impressive and he finished the season booting 8 goals in his two finals appearances.

Athletically Lonie has a good basis to work with, his agility is elite, his tank places him in the top 20% & his reaction time is very good. The slight concern will be his pace which places him in the lower half of the pool however I don't think this will be a deal breaker as far as recruiters are concerned. Lonie also comes from good stock being the cousin of former Magpie Ryan Lonie and former Hawk & Power player Nathan Lonie. From all reports he has interviewed very well and should be drafted in the national draft at the end of the month.

I knew you were going to grab him before my next pick!

Pick 60 Geelong Zac Ballard 184cm from Northern Knights averages 26 disposals, has some toe and breaks the lines.
