OK, we've all had a few days to reflect on the retirement of the big fella. it's been a sad few days, but its time to move on. it's time we all stopped looking back and started to look forward. for all those advocating richo should have played on next year... WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG.
richo turns 35 in march. has dodgy hammies. only played 6 games this year. we've been blooding jack and postie. could he play on the wing at his age and with his injury concerns? i think not.
make no mistake, the retirement of Richo was a selfless act. but i'm actually wondering if we should be critical of the RFC for not making the call themselves...? was dimma/CC too weak to end Richos career? were they worried about a supporter backlash? let's face it... richo retiring was a bit of a no brainer for the more rational supporters out there who don't see things through rose coloured glasses 24/7. but a lot of us our there would have wanted to tear the clubrooms down if the list management people made the call.
Hehe... maybe I can show you a few points you're missing...
We had the choice between forcing Richo into retirement, or waiting to see how his body comes up knowing he would willingly step down. Possible consequences? We get fit Richo next year, or, he retires by his own wishes. Your suggestion? We never know if his body could hold up AND we drag the club's name through the mud in the name of list management by forcing him into a possibly premature retirement.
It's not just a supporter backlash we would face - ALL supporters of the AFL would look at Richmond with disgust. It would lower our already poor reputation in the league and be a financial landmine.
You may think, "but what if we let him train and his hammy DID improve? We should have just cut him anyway" well if his body held up then there would be no reason for him not to go around next year now would there.
The club easily made the best decision in regards to it's future, Matty's reputation, our reputation and list management.
So personally, nah the club can't be critisised for it's handling of Richo's retirement.
