Really like the way he is developing. Played very well last night and has good game craft. He needs to take more marks but that will come with more strength and experience. What about that kick to Judson Clarke in the last quarter!! Wow!

I think where the lines get blurred with all that anyway , many of the kids get to those schools through scholarships if they are good at footy/ sport .
Mate of mine from Frankston whose son is doing really well in footy is going to haileybury, as dad says , no *smile* way would I be paying for that
Fair. Clsss snobbery goes both ways. Agree with all that re. talent development, they do a great job. My main gripe is the constant reference to these schools by the Ch 7 commentary team during games. We get it, BT and Brayshaw!
In a perfect world I reckon we’d like to give him a spell , working so hard , that pushing and shoving Rucks do would be draining the light frame . Definitely impacting
You bet there’s doubt, he’s a tall, this is very similar to the Gus Graham/ Ben Grifffiths/Liam McBen hype. He’s still 50/50. Is he showing some good tap work absolutely, is he still looking like his arms and legs aren’t connected to his central nervous system at certain times, absolutely. Again he’s tracking ok but I’m not going to push the chips into the middle of the table. And I’ve been wrong and flipped on blokes ( Broad & MacIntosh) so I’m not Fonzie. But young rucks / talls are dicey.
My take on ruck stats is that the data is one sided.
Hitouts and hitouts to advantage.

In the last true man on man contest the contest is king.
But there are 3 outcomes - winning the ruck, losing it and nullifying.
its not enough to win sometimes, its unrealistic to think we should win all the time. So the aim is to win sometimes and prevent any easy wins to them.
Got to work hard to defend and nullify an east tap.
(We all remember that blues elimination where Ivan got towelled)

Ryan won 40 odd % of his ruck contests. Its Ok for a young ruck.
Of the 55% that ceglar are blicavs won, did Samson do enough to prevent a hit to advantage to the bad guys?
He did against hawkins. Loved his technique and positioning, he wasnt letting Tom push him from behind.

I didn't think it was a game where Ryan showed his true genius, no big marks, no goals from the boundary line on the run, but I thought it was his 1st game where he was a true AFL standard ruck, not a promising type, not showing a handful of glimpses, but a game where he rucked most of it, worked all of it and broke even against 2 other AFL standard rucks.

I haven't seen many players tap the ball as well as Sampson. Also good around the ground.
I hope they consider NOT bulking him up too much. If he loses his leap he might be a lot less effective.

They usually don't put much work into bulking players up these days. In a running game it's more about lean muscle, get the strength but don't get cumbersome. At 22 years old, he's always going to put on a bit more bulk purely from natural growth n maturity while doing athletic work n training.
Kid needs some work at being able to hold his ground in the physical contests and stick a couple of those almost marks in a game and I reckon he'll have Tiger fans grinnin more often than not.
I agree. In fact if you had mentioned this part about the commentary team in your original post I would have understood your gripe. If they want to mention their background they could mention their U.18 team or the town/city they grew up in. How about writing to Ch.7?
Continues to improve match by match but still has a way to go to be a real number one ruck. At times all too easy to be pushed off the ball but that will come right in the next few matches as experience is gained
Went to the game and thought he played great, just watched the replay, holy crap his last quarter was superb! Everyone would have been happy if he just kept competing, well he kept competing and he kept winning! I think he only lost one contest until a couple in junktime. Tremendous effort, its the sort of effort you'd expect and praise from a great seasoned ruckman much less a pup.
Won the ruck emphatically in the first 5 minutes when the game still needed to be won, also ran, made space, took marks, set up a goal with great decision makling and skill. Keeps improving, and I was gunna write keeps surprising but oddly I wasn't surprised.. I'm a bit in awe of Sampson.
One thing he does which I like a lot and haven't seen often, is sometimes when he is outmanouevred or out muscled and 'loses' the contest, he'll lunge and twist in the air and reach out a big long arm and get a few fingertips on the ball anyway to effectively halve the contest.
