Talking Politics

Oh god nooooooooooo TF. She couldn't even handle the Treasurer portfolio when she had a chance.

People have short memories. She was turfed out as Shadow treasurer and was replaced by Hockey ;D. What does that say about her ?

Please, Libs, for the sake of the nation, elect a new leader. Make the ALP work hard to try and win the next election.

Have to agree. I'm getting tired of seeing incompetent, incapable oppositions winning elections simply because more incompetent, even more incapable governments let them. It would be nice to be able to choose between a strong government and a strong opposition come election time rather than 'anyone else would be better than this current mob' thinking

The foreign ministry seems to be an easy one to build profile. It lifts you above the fray simply because you rarely deal with domestic issues and when you are in the media you are seen with dignitaries in interesting locations. People are easily fooled. That isn't to say she isn't competent, she earned her degree and practised law competently (I think it is a bit sour to use moral arguments against lawyers, she did her job - question the nature of jurisprudence). But the party system just keeps bubbling the same types to the top it seems. Not sure what would be required to change it, or even what that change would look like.

Amazing that Abbott says people aren't interested in insider gossip and instability when asked about Bishop, given he focused on it obsessively with Labor.
The hypocrisy of this guy knows no bounds. He's a walking, talking hypocrite.

The NT version of the libs, the CLP, sacked their leader last night. the 2nd time they have changed chief ministers in their few years in office.

it looks like across the country the libs are going thru what labour went thru just a few years ago. with the exception of WA they are a complete mess.

Watch out Tone, Julie's coming. Must be close to flashpoint as it looks like history will repeat itself with another leadership spill, but this time it's the Libs.

I think it can go a lot longer. Have a horrible feeling things are going to get worse before they get better with this Government. Abbott or no Abbott.
I really worry about what damage they are doing to the country whilst this calamity is unfolding.

Labor should be hoping that no one challenges Abbott as he is their best chance at winning the next election.

Possibly tigerman but the libs are between a rock and a hard place on this. If they do replace Abbott with someone better, then all the backstabbing stuff the libs used on Gillard will be turned right back on them. And we know that the public doesn't like changes of leadership, even if for the better.

Labor are about ten points ahead in the 2 party preferred polls right about now.

When Labor switched from Hawke to Keating it didn't hurt them when all the polls said that the Liberal leader whose name escapes me would bolt it in.

so far it seems Abbott's reasoning to stay PM is that they dont want to repeat Labor's mistakes, and some broad statements about being a good captain, (except when he makes a 'captains' pick). i reckon if does not want to repeat Labors mistake he should quit or at least call a vote soon. IMO the worse thing about Labor's effort were not that they changed PM but that it was done messily, went on and on, and that Rudd didnt go quietly.

not sure what I want to happen. neither turnbull or bishop could be worse than abbott. i reckon Morrison and Brough could be. i would be happy to see Abbott no longer our pm, but him staying is the best chance of this government equally the vic and qld libs efforts of getting turfed after 1 term.

John Hewson - he attempted to introduce the GST but didn't sell it properly and handed the election to Keating.

Personally I don't have a problem with parties changing leader - sometimes it's necessary. But the political context has changed now because the Libs went like attack dogs out of hell for Gillard on the issue, so it sucks to be them right about now. Brodders is right too - Labor didn't handle the transition well and Rudd was there white-anting for all he was worth.

Thanks. Keating beat him on that one by promising not to oppose the GST if Hewson won.

Beazley didn't learn from that and promised to block Howard's GST. People voted Howard in on the basis that they thought the Democrats and Labor would combine in the senate to block it. Democrats' decision to back out of that was the beginning of the end for them.

Keating and Labor were actually about 10 % points behind the coalition at the start of that campaign but reeled them in and won - hence the "sweetest victory of all" speech from Keating.

On Beazley, remember that Beazley/Labor actually had a majority of the popular vote in that election and still lost!

Anyone else surprised at how quickly the party and media have turned on Tone ? The Prince Philip affair really opened the flood gates in a big big way

It sure did bring it to a head Baloo, but he had made a couple of embarrassing stuff ups before that, like when he said he going to shirt front Putin.

A lot of people are peeved at his " no cuts to health, education or Abc and Sbs" broken promises.

After saying at every opportunity that Labor could not be trusted, he has left them for dead in his untrustworthiness.
