Talking Politics

Two interesting tidbits i saw last night.

Total time as PM
Gillard: 3 yrs, 3 days
Rudd: 2 yrs, 286 days
Abbott: 1 yr, 357 days
Shortest serving PM since Harold Holt!

Also a Prime Minister doesn't get a full Prime Ministerial pension & benefits unless they've had 2 years of office.
Abbott was sworn in 18th September, 2013.

Gee that's bad luck.

I still scratch my head that this muppett was a PM at all.

Black Jack McEwan only had 7 days from memory?

No sure Remote, that's what the media is saying.

Think what I love most about this are Abbott's 'We're not Labor' comments only to have exactly the same thing happen to him as happened with Labor's instability.

I bet Blue tie Turnbull won't cop the same 'traitor', 'Backstabber', 'Scarlett woman' tags that Gillard was tarred with during her tenure from corners of the media. :blah

Some people on twitter have debunked that. He was elected to parliament pre 2004 which means he comes under an older benefit scheme. It is a little complex but essentially due to serving at least 18 years he gets 75% of base salary (up to the max salary he earned while in parliament).

goodbye to the worst PM in the history of this country and our embarrassment to the world. this is a bad result for labour, but good for the country. hopefully MT brings the LNP out of the dark ages and back to being a centre-right party after being dragged to the extreme right by Howard and Abbott.

my advice to the new PM, is that if you wanna get Victorians back on side, the first thing you can do it to hand over the $3 billion of Abbotts blackmail money to be used on the metro rail tunnel.

That's the word. And Turnbull has to keep the conservative side of the party happy. Many of those who were Abbott supporters will get ministries - Matthias Cormann would be another. There's a limited amount of viable brain power in the Parliament for the Libs, you can't burn them all.

and this will be his biggest issue (and most likely downfall at the next election). pretty sure he's pro gay marriage isn't he? if he's gonna toe the party line on this type of issue, then they're doomed.

definitely not, but good old Rupert doesn't appear to be massively happy about this, which proves this is a good thing ;D

There's even less brain power in the ALP ,most have come from the shallow end of the union pool.

which is why more of us should be voting for alternate parties instead of the same old 2.

Happy with my Independent. For the first time in ages I know who I'll vote for long before an election is announced.

and that's the thing. the big parties take the voters for granted (especially if you live in a safe seat). we need to make them work harder for our vote. we also need to get rid of compulsory voting for the same reasons.

Restores my faith in the system a little bit. Abbott was that bad, even the libs punted him. He was so divisive, extreme and insular.

It will lift the level of debate, which had sunk to amazing lows. The ALP will have to lift their game and actually come up with some ideas and communicate them. Can't see Shorten surviving.

My unworkable solution is to have truely representative voting. If you get too few votes (say less than 40% of the total number of people in your electorate) you get no seat at all. The people get the picture - if we dont vote we go unrepresented. The pollies get the picture - if I don't get them out to vote, sayonara pension and perks. Whaddaya think?

On one level, I really like it! And that is that it holds everyone accountable, and that can't be a bad thing!

Abbott's performance as PM was matched by his performance as Minister for Women and Minister for indigenous Affairs. (or whatever the titles were).

not convinced about Turnbull but at least he aint Abbott.
