"Right-wing terrorism", such as it is, is merely a reaction to the other. And the other is the spawn of leftism, which is why you lot are so keen to dismiss it or explain it away or occasionally even justify it.

Terrorism is Islamic terrorism. It can't be redefined by *smile* journalism.

Which is it?

Or are you seriously equating conservative Islamism with leftism (whatever that is)?

You seem a little confused here, time for a lie down and a bex.

Right wing terrorism is simply right wing terrorism, they are quite capable of blowing up buildings etc all by themselves, along with plotting to kidnap a governor and all the other crap they get up to. A 250% rise is a 250% rise, are you questioning the percentage rise or just trying to play down the impact of those who are right wing and terrorists (in any case would that not include Al Qaeda and ISIS - they are right wing). Or are the lovely militias toting their guns in the USA freedom fighters in your opinion?

Terrorism is actually all about spreading terror as symbolic power. Groups resort to terrorism as they cannot exercise real power. The issue with ISIS was actually a lot worse than terrorism, they began to hold real power and control of geographic areas. They still control a small part of Syria. Those who exercise real power have control, those who use terrorism to try and achieve their ends do so because they lack the ability to exercise real power.

DS

PS - terrorism existed before Islamic terrorism became a thing. Are you seriously telling me the Zionists didn't use terrorism in the 40s, that the Liberation Tigers in Sri Lanka who invented suicide bombing are not terrorists?

Another alleged terrorist in court:
Terror-accused NSW teen stays behind bars
Blair Thomson

A NSW teenager accused of espousing far-right terrorism will remain behind bars following a court appearance.

Tyler Jakovac's matter was heard in Albury Local Court on Thursday but he did not appear in person.

The 18-year-old faces charges of urging violence against groups and advocating a terrorist act or commission of terrorism offence.

Police allege he used the web service Telegram from October 19 last year until Wednesday to urge violence and the killing of "non-whites, Jews and Muslims".

He has allegedly used the far-right European Brotherhood group to urge violence against other races and religions.

The group features Nazi symbolism.

He did not make a bid for bail.

Jakovac had been arrested at his Albury home on Wednesday morning.

He will return to court in Parramatta on February 26.

Commonwealth prosecutors are involved in the case as it involves two federal charges, rather than state offences.

The court heard the case was moving to Sydney as the chief magistrate preferred terrorism cases be heard at Parramatta.

Lawyer Mark Rosalky did not oppose the case being moved or the 11-week adjournment.

Mr Rosalky asked that the Albury man receive mental health treatment in custody.

Magistrate Richard Funston said he could raise that issue with corrections staff.

"If you just make that note to Corrective Services," he said.

The court heard a brief of evidence would be served on Legal Aid's commonwealth crime unit in Sydney by February 18.

Mr Funston asked Mr Rosalky if his client wasn't applying for bail.

"That's correct Your Honour," he replied.

Mr Rosalky declined to comment on the case outside court.

Jakovac is in the Albury police holding cells.

Federal police involved in Wednesday's arrest appeared in court but Jakovac did not have any family or supporters appear.

ISIS supporter shot, killed by police on Brisbane motorway (paywalled)

David Murray
The Australian
December 17, 2020

A man shot and killed by police on a Brisbane motorway after cutting off a GPS tracker and advancing on officers with a knife had been accused of being a radicalised ISIS supporter.

State and federal police are now investigating the motives of 22-year-old Raghe Mohamed Abdi, with officers told statewide to increase their vigilance for possible terror events.

“At this point in time, we’re not calling this a terrorism event,” Queensland Police Service Deputy Commissioner Tracy Linford said.

“We will have to pursue each of the avenues of inquiry to determine what led to him being (there) at that point in time and what led to him pulling out a knife on our police officers.”

Police were called about 6am on Thursday after reports that a man was walking on the Logan Motorway at Drewvale, causing a hazard to motorists just as the morning peak hour started.

Two officers were trying to coax him off the road when he produced a knife, Ms Linford said. He was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

The man was later identified by police as Mr Abdi.

In May last year, counter terrorism officers arrested Mr Abdi at Brisbane’s international airport as he waited to board a flight to Somalia with a one-way ticket.

Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney said on Thursday that police suspected Mr Abdi was going overseas for a foreign incursion, but released him without charge due to insufficient evidence.

His passport was subsequently cancelled, and in June last year he was charged with refusing to hand over his mobile phone’s passcode, Mr McCartney said.

Remanded in custody, he refused to answer the magistrate or acknowledge the authority of the court, Mr McCartney said. He applied for and was granted bail on September 3.

Terrorism investigators had opposed bail, saying there was a risk Mr Abdi would interfere with witnesses, obstruct justice and fail to reappear.

The court was told it was alleged he had a radicalised belief system, telling his mother he had believed in ISIS since he was 14.

Ms Linford said Mr Abdi had on Wednesday cut off a GPS tracker he was required to wear under his bail conditions, setting off an alert.

In response, police attended Mr Abdi’s home around 4.30pm on Wednesday. Mr Abdi was not home and officers spoke to his father at the time.

Police returned to the home around 8.30pm and again spoke to the father, with Mr Abdi still not at home.

Officers searched bushland but could not located Mr Abdi of the tracking device.

Both officers involved in the shooting had body-worn cameras. Neither of the officers knew the man on the road was Mr Abdi, Ms Linford said.

Ms Linford said police were pursuing all known associates.

“The background’s important because we’ve got to try to understand what it was that caused him to be there in the first instance,” she said.

Dozens dead in Baghdad suicide attack (paywalled)

The toll in a twin suicide bombing in an open-air Baghdad market on Thursday has reached at least 28 dead and 73 wounded.

The interior ministry said the first suicide bomber had rushed into the market and claimed to feel sick, so that people would gather around him. He then detonated his explosives.

As people gathered around the victims, a second attacker detonated his bomb.

Medical sources said they feared the death toll could be twice as high as officially announced. The health ministry said it had mobilised medics across the capital to respond to the deadliest attack in three years.

The bombers had struck a huge market for second-hand clothes in Tayaran Square, which had been teeming with people following nearly a year of restrictions imposed in a bid to halt the spread of COVID-19.

After years of deadly sectarian violence, suicide bombings have become relatively rare in the capital. The last such attack was in June 2019 and left several people dead.

Thursday’s attack was not immediately claimed but suicide bombings have been used by ultra-conservative Islamist groups, most recently the Islamic State organisation.

Iraq declared the terrorists defeated at the end of 2017 after a fierce three-year campaign to retake the one-third of the country that had been seized by the jihadists. But the group’s sleeper cells have continued to operate in desert and mountain areas, typically targeting security forces or state infrastructure.

That’s so sad. And praying on people’s decency and compassion.

Another terrorist attack involving Muslims:

Four dead in 'terrorist attack' as driver runs over Muslim family in London, Ontario

Posted 2ddays ago, updated 1dday ago

A driver ran over a family of five in a ute, killing four and seriously injuring the other, in an attack that targeted the victims because they were Muslims, Canadian police say.

Key points:

  • The sole surviving family member is a nine-year-old boy, who is in a serious condition
  • Police have charged a 20-year-old with first degree murder and said he didn't know the victims
  • Muslim groups say the attack was more than a hate crime and have labelled it terrorism
Authorities said a young man was arrested in the parking lot of a nearby mall after the incident in the Ontario city of London.
Police said a black ute mounted a curb and struck the victims at an intersection.
"This was an act of mass murder perpetrated against Muslims," London Mayor Ed Holder said.
"It was rooted in unspeakable hatred. The magnitude of such hatred can make one question who we were as a city."
Police said the dead were a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl.
A nine-year-old boy was reported to be in a serious condition.

)

The family requested the names not be released, officials said.
Nathaniel Veltman, 20, was in custody facing four counts of first-degree murder.
Police said Mr Veltman, a resident of London, did not know the victims.
Detective Superintendent Paul Waight said Mr Veltman was wearing a vest that appeared to be like body armour.
Superintendent Waight said police did not know at this point if the suspect was a member of any specific hate group, and London police were working with federal police and prosecutors to see about potential terrorism charges.
He declined to detail evidence pointing to a possible hate crime, but said the attack was planned.
"We believe the victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith," London Police Chief Stephen Williams said.
"We understand that this event may cause fear and anxiety in the community, particularly in the Muslim community, in any community targeted by hate … There is no tolerance in this community who are motivated by hate to target others with violence."
Canada is generally welcoming toward immigrants and all religions, but in 2017 a French Canadian man known for far-right, nationalist views went on a shooting rampage at a Quebec City mosque that killed six people.
One woman who witnessed the aftermath of the deadly crash said she couldn't stop thinking about the victims.
Paige Martin said she was stopped at a red light around 8:30pm when the large pick-up roared past her.
She said her car shook from the force.
"I was shaken up, thinking it was an erratic driver,″ Ms Martin said.
Minutes later, she said, she came upon a gruesome, chaotic scene at an intersection near her home, with first responders running to help, a police officer performing chest compressions on one person and three other people lying on the ground.

A few dozen people stood on the sidewalk and several drivers got out of their cars to help.
"I can't get the sound of the screams out of my head," Ms Martin said.
From her apartment, she could see the scene and watched an official drape a sheet over one body about midnight.
"My heart is just so broken for them."
Zahid Khan, a family friend, said the three generations among the dead were a grandmother, father, mother and teenage daughter. The family had immigrated from Pakistan 14 years ago and were dedicated, decent and generous members of the London Muslim Mosque, he said.
"They were just out for their walk that they would go out for every day," Mr Khan said through tears near the site of the crash. "I just wanted to see."
A fundraising webpage said the father was a physiotherapist and cricket enthusiast and his wife was working on a PhD in civil engineering at Western University in London.
Their daughter was finishing ninth grade, and the grandmother was a "pillar" of the family, the page said.
Qazi Khalil said he saw the family on Thursday when they were out for their nightly walk. The families lived close to each other and would get together on holidays, he said.
"This has totally destroyed me from the inside," Mr Khalil said.
"I can't really come to the terms they were no longer here."
The National Council of Canadian Muslims said it was beyond horrified, saying Muslims in Canada have become all too familiar with the violence of Islamophobia.
"This is a terrorist attack on Canadian soil, and should be treated as such,″ council head Mustafa Farooq said.
"We call on the government to prosecute the attacker to the fullest extent of the law, including considering terrorist charges."
About a dozen police officers combed the area around the crash site looking for evidence on Monday. Blue markers on the ground dotted the intersection.
The mayor said flags would be lowered for three days.
Superintendent Waight said he believed four dead to be the most homicide victims in a single incident in the city's history.
"Hate and Islamophobia have no place in Ontario. Justice must be served for the horrific act of hatred that took place in London, Ontario," Ontario Premier Doug Ford tweeted.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends during this difficult time. These heinous acts of violence must stop."
