Tyler Sonsie

If you watched him carefully yesterday his poor disposal, especially in the first half, was when he was trying to avoid body contact.

Lot of talk about Sonsie vs Dow. Sonsie's disposal is impacted when he tries to avoid contact, Dow's disposal is impacted after he's just worn a whole bunch of it. Both can look great in the VFL, and both have struggled to replicate that form in the seniors.

But I think it's pretty obvious why Dow's getting games and Sonsie isn't. Dow wears the contact, Sonsie avoids it - and you can't win the ball if you aren't in the contest. If Sonsie fixes that part of his game, then Dow's spot is vulnerable. But until he does, he's going to stay on the fringes.

KMac2 is a more interesting case for mine - there's gotta be something that's kept him out of the 1s for so long.... what is it?

Didn’t realize Sonz had 10 clearances on Sunday.

From the club website:
Tyler Sonsie (34 disposals, 20 contested possessions, 10 clearances, five inside-50's, one goal)

“Strong performance around center bounce, 16 ground ball gets and 20 contested possessions. Stayed around the ball really strongly, was clean below his feet, brought his teammates into the game and was a real leader in our midfield.”

Was named our player of the game.

So in summary: it seems we need to play him in the midfield at senior level and promise him at least 4 games on the trot. We know him will take the first one (maybe two) to adjust to the lift in level and intensity. But if we give him that security, encouragement and time to settle, playing in his right position, we may find we’ve got something. If not, we’ll know for sure he’s just a good VFL player, and can move him on.

This year - where we’re not expecting wins and (without tanking) there are advantages in a low ladder position - is a perfect and rare opportunity for strategies like this. It’s likely what’s happening with Dow too.

Should be in the team playing midfield

We need to create space for sonsie even if it means moving Hopper , Taranto and Dow
We need to see what this guy is capable of at the level

If that doesn’t warrant you a full game in the midfield I don’t know what does. I’d be flat with Yze if he doesn’t give the lad a chance.

He has beefed up this year. I thought he was much better in the prac matches than previous years games. We've only seen him in a half as the sub and he was pretty good without doin anything extroadinary. The team was great and he matched the level. He smashed the game from a stats point last week in the VFL.
All signs point to him tracking better than he has for the last few years. Hes still gonna have some down games, and he still might not make it. But all his outings and preseason effort at the very least show this year is different in his want to put on muscle and progress his game. Lets hope it pays off for him and the confidence to play his game at the level comes along with the work hes put in.

Looks like his first few steps have gotten quicker too.

Don't mind us trying him there if Yze thinks he's worth a shot but not at the expense of team rules or structure.
Sonsie's had big numbers at VFL level before but three AFL coaches now have overlooked giving him a go in the senior midfield.
These coaches will have also seen how he performs against our other mids in match sim at training, get GPS data & would have certain KPIs they want him to meet. Despite many of us demanding he has a sustained go in the AFL midfield, he's not being overlooked for no reason. If he gets selected great but if not? so be it.

Plays well as a midfielder in the VFL and then doesn't play there when selected to play AFL. That leaves me a bit conflicted, he has appeared lackadaisical....but his development would be better if he played in the same position when promoted to play AFL.

I haven't given up on him, it might be that he's maturing a bit later than others.

Mine is a slight variation on your take
If he doesn't get selected - we'll probably never know
If he does get selected - and flops - so be it.
I'm all for finding out

I’ll be disappointed in Yze if he doesn’t get a go along with CBA’s.

So, hypothetically, if a guy gets told to work on things in game, doesnt work on those things in game, but still plays ok at VFL level, should he be rewarded with AFL selection?

Lynch must come in - so lets assume Bauer OUT (rightly of wrongly). Otherwise one of Armstrong/Fawcett and I'd (personally) prefer they both get another crack ....

Banks (inj) is OUT so that is a no brainer (either Sonsie or McAuliffe)

I for one would like to see Sonsie for three reasons (and it's not to take anything away from McAuliffe)

1. He played one of his best games at VFL - when played in Midfield position
2. We must be a meritocracy and he put his hand up (he was BoG - we can't ask for more)
3. He's still very young but we've seen that he clearly has some real potential (which is why he was chosen from the Rowville Sports Academy in the first place)

So - play him in the midfield (tell Taranto and Hopper to lift their game!!) and lets see how he goes

McAuliffe can wait another week (assuming Mansell not OUT or someone else not dropped eg Dow?)

McAuliffe was BOG in our final practice match against Carlton and very unlucky not to be selected for last weeks seniors v Port.
He comes out for the VFL team and was arguably our most damaging player. Cannot do any more and should be first selected.

Sonsie needs to increase his appetite for the contest if he's gonna make it.

My question would be why did he look so good in his first year when he was raw and he got some AFL games as opposed to now. His first outings he looked exciting and played with instinct. Now he looks scared and seems to second guess every possession he gets. The kid should be given a 5 game block and played in a role that promotes his strengths. If we can give Dow the amount of games he has had then Sonsie deserves the same. Will he be good enough or not that we don't know but if he isn't giving the correct opportunity then that is coaching negligence. Yes 3 coaches have overlooked him and perhaps his training standards haven't been up to scratch but let's just give him a fair crack at it and if he shows nothing then we can put a line through him. Not playing as a winger or HHF but in his natural midfield position and in the position where he was named BOG in the VFL.
