DYNASTY!!!

1927 Collingwood beats Richmond in freezing wet conditions 2:13 to 1:7. The lowest winning and losing scores in history.
1928 Collingwood draws the Semi and Richmond has to wait two weeks to play them in the GF and loses 13:18 to 9:9
1929 Richmond wins the grand final, but under the rules Collingwood who finished top of the ladder had the right to challenge and won the replay the next week.
1930 Geelong wins the grand final and again Collingwood challenged and won the replay. Coll d Rich by 3 points in the semi final.

The softest fourpeat ever, and if you want more pain.

1919 Richmond beats Coll in the GF and Coll as minor premier challenges and wins the replay.
1924 There is no grandfinal, just three weeks of round robin matches for the top four. Rich beats Ess in the last round and Ess and wins the premiership on percentage!

Aah, The Argus System and the Revised Argus System. Bloody terrible they were. Would have been early 1930s they came up with the final 4 (McIntyre System?) which was so much better.

Still, that was the system back then and there was always speculation that the team who finished top after the H&A would throw the first final to make the VFL more money and ensure a Grand Final. You can only play to the rules at the time. My impression of the late 20s has always been that Collingwood were the best team, followed by daylight, followed by Richmond, followed by daylight, then the rest. Pity we were great when Collingwood were exceptional.

are any of our 12 dodgy second chance challenge premierships?

Id want to hand them back if they were.

More prestige in Shaun Hampson winning Australian Survivor.

Have I got this right? Collingwood have 12 proper premierships and 3 consolation ones?

Page-McIntyre system started in 1931.

Our 1920 flag was a "challanged" flag.
1921 we finished second and had to beat Cartoon twice - and did.

I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.
how relevant is counting vfl PREmierships in the modern era.

I actually like the challenge system. The top team should get an advantage. If Geelong had a right of challenge in 2008 they would have beaten Hawks by 10 goals in any replay. Ditto Bombers in 1999 and us in 2018.

In a Mcintyre system I like a final 5. It actually gives the top side a real advantage and gives teams 1 - 3 a potential double chance in week 2 of the finals. The top team is guaranteed at least a PF.

Of course top team presumes you have a proper fixture of everyone playing everyone else home and away and of course this wont happen because .......MONEY...... and the AFL is a product not a competition

So we continue with a system that rewards mediocrity and gives team that finished 8th a chance to win the flag.

You don't know this?

4 in a row: 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 by Collingwood. We lost the first 3 of those Grand Finals, and 1931, but came back to win 1932 and 1934, just a pity we stuffed up against South Melbourne foreign legion in 1933.

As for Richmond, hard to go past the 8 years 1967 to 1974 - 4 flags and 5 Grand Finals, 3 GFs in a row from 1972 to 1974 and out in the Preliminary Final in 1975.

Not sure 4 in a row is still possible.

Also made the prelim in 1971. Beaten by at Kilda in the wet

And 75 when Green played on in the square in time on and had his kick smothered by Crosswell and cost us a chance to pinch the game against North with Royce lurking.

We would have been a goal down with about 3 minutes to play.

BTW I only just remembered/realised /found out a few years ago we finished 3rd in 71. As a kid growing up that year was stricken from my memory as a horrible failure.

Would have been celebrated wildly if it had happened in the nineties or naughties.

At least in 1975 we got to knock Carlton out of the finals . We did a lot better against north In that prelim than Hawthorn did a week later

Agree - Challenge and final 5 system works a lot better with at least on paper an unbiased draw where everyone plays everyone home and away once. I’d still argue some home grounds confer more advantage than others and weather conditions Contribute to percentage outcomes but it would be as fair as you could get.

with that said challenge would be a massive massive advantage for first vs the rest... but so is 4th v 5th and 8th v9th as we well know.

Not sure you are allowed to challenge if you lose the Prelim

You are not allowed to. Lamb22 is saying you ought to be allowed if you get knocked out in the prelim. I would agree with this but not for going out in straight sets or for losing the (current system) grand final.

*Buckenera reckons it's our flag to lose next year.
The bar is set very very high.
Watch them come if we don't have a good season.
*Robbo still reckons geelong would've beaten us if we played the best of 3.
*Malcolm blight the loser reckons he knows what Dkye did wrong after the 2017 GF loss.
This is coming from the king of GF slappings.

Sound a bit like this Brexit rubbish we are suffering in UK. If you don't like the result, complain and demand a rematch

2020 could be the most exciting season yet. This group hasn’t finished yet. Some players are yet to enter their prime. Rance & Stack will be back. There is a lot to be excited about.

If all you want to do is find out who the best team is, the challenge system had its merits but it had the huge disadvantage of meaning you didn't actually know which game was going to be the "final" Grand Final in advance. Imagine that today?
Final five was best ... the best team(s) bubbled to the top which doesn't necessarily happen in the current final eight.
I think more often than not (given the limitations of having to eliminate seven teams in four weeks) the final eight system is pretty good - it nearly always finds the right premier but I suspect it often lends itself towards letting a lesser side into the Grand Final, e.g. Giants this year.

While I reckon the final 5 was the best system they ever came up with: top got an advantage over 2 and 3 who had an advantage over 4 and 5, we now have 18 teams so a final 8 seems reasonable.

The current system is decent. Top 4 have an definite advantage, home state advantage for higher teams. It's no a bad compromise all round. I do wonder if there could have been a really good final 7 system developed, try and work the best of the final 5.

The final 8 system itself is okay. The problem is the bye between the final round and the finals. Without referring to stats my observation would be that the top 4 teams that win week 1 then struggle in the first half of the PF after 2 out of 3 weeks as a bye
