It all depends how long the lockout lasts.
The club if asked can come to an arrangement with members who have lost there jobs, or others who can't justify the outlay they've made but can't go to the footy.
An option for the club would be to reward members next season ie, members who don't want any compensation this season could be offered discounted memberships next season. I'd be ok with that.

The only refund i will see to get back is the $200+ for Auskick and the $250 for registration at juinor footy.
And also the $350 from swimming.

Doesn't seem likely that we'll be given an option. Our club has come in from the wilderness in the nick of time.

Government restrictions could force AFL to suspend 2020 AFL season
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
March 22, 2020

The AFL could be forced to shut down its competition as early as tomorrow after Prime Minister Scott Morrison cancelled all non-essential travel in the country.

The league is currently working through the ramifications of that decision ahead of another meeting of the country’s “wartime” cabinet on Sunday night.

Today’s three AFL games and AFLW final are going ahead as scheduled but as Victoria prepares to shut down its schools by Tuesday, Morrison’s declaration could be a game-changer.

With borders shut by individual states the league could by strict definition continue the season with players undertaking employment that is essential.

But the AFL and its coronavirus cabinet could also make the decision to suspend the season for the foreseeable future given the perception of playing while the country is in lockdown.

A shutdown would likely be for many months given the coronavirus has not peaked and Morrison warned the measures could be in place for six months.

Asked if the AFL season will end because of restrictions on non-essential travel, Morrison said authorities would consider “new arrangements”.

He said of sporting codes continuing: “I’m sure we can work those issues through on a practical case-by-case basis”.

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch today told 3AW he was open to the suggestion that clubs played one more round of derbies and instate contests, with the Power playing Adelaide in Round 2.

He admitted if the AFL didn’t handle this crisis properly clubs would go out of business.

“It is the greatest threat to our game that we have been through in probably multiple generations,” he said.

“There is no doubt about that.

“Don’t underestimate if we don’t handle this well, our game out the other side of this bridge won’t look like everyone has been used to.”

Asked about the potential loss of clubs, he replied: “Of course we could (lose clubs).

“It is that serious, but let me tell you every single club and the AFL, what has been achieved in the last 10 days is fricking remarkable.

“The co-operation, the collegiate thinking has been amazing and we are all working our backside off to make sure we get through this and it is no simple matter.”

AFL legend Leigh Matthews told Seven’s GameDay he believed the AFL’s captains should all declare they would take pay cuts as a symbol they were prepared to sacrifice.

“Tell you what I would love - the 10 people on the AFL executive have volunteered a 20 per pay cut. The 18 coaches have volunteered a pay cut. How about the AFL 18 captains showing leadership. They know they will have to take more than a 20 per cent pay cut. But volunteer it as an example to the 800 players.”

It came as Seven broadcaster Hamish McLachlan, the brother of AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, said Eddie McGuire’s projections of a $500 million bloodbath could be underestimating the financial losses.

“I reckon, to be honest, that might be light on. There are $418 million in TV broadcast alone. If we only get one round out of the way that disappeared, plus the gate (ticket sales), plus sponsors plus the membership.”

Thought there was a age limit on Auskick.

ScoMo said "non-essential travel" which I doubt affects sporting teams competing interstate.

If the season is lost, one possibility is that the AFL forces strong clubs to spread their resources across the competition in a full-scale socialist model, putting every club on an equal footing while the AFL argues that the well-supported clubs will regain their positions eventually. In one sense the AFL would be achieving its dream outcome.

Let the weak disappear.
Where were they for us in the late 80's.

I want a super league

Season suspended for 9 weeks (2 months) until May 31.

If there's possibility of continuing from June, it'll be interesting to see what the clubs do now with the players. Must create a temp VFL comp (one for each state) to keep players in rhythm until AFL opens again.

No guarantees of course but had to happen when Richmond are at their peak and odds on to win 2020 flag.
Couldn’t have happened when we were cellar dwellers!!!
Going to miss a year of marvelling at Dusty and enjoying twilight years of some of our senior players like Jack, Bacher and Shed

Im hearing you DA, but if it did happen when we were cellar dwellers, then we would be one of the clubs that would probably fold...

I wonder whether people would feel differently about the prospect of a refund if it meant the end of football as we know it, at least for a long period of time?

I'm no accountant but we made 4 million odd dollars last year and have about 25 million in the bank. We received a dividend of about 12 million from the AFL.

With the media rights worth about 400 million per year if there is little footy played this year that goes up in smoke and so would the dividend. We probably make 500k out of each home game on average, so there's another 6-7 million.

Straight away we are in a hole of about 14 million and that is before any accounting for sponsors wanting to revise agreements or not being able to meet commitments due to their own financial issues.

Throw in the reduced revenue from pokies and the leisure arm of the club and that 25 million in reserve has taken a huge hit.

And we are in a strong position.

Clubs in a weaker financial position may not survive, which in turn changes the entire landscape of the game. Media rights are worth less and a heap of revenue goes out of the game at a time when the AFL also has a financial crisis in every level of the game.

Footy is a small part of life, especially at the moment, but make no mistake it is under serious threat.
Footy is under huge threat , make no bones about it
Huge issues with Virgin and other sponsors
Don’t forget our other business ventures Aligned Leisure etc . Huge problems
No gate receipts this year will sink a few clubs . Current club model will change . AFL are relying on Government to bail them out if they cannot secure loan from one of the major banks

So, you requested this? it isn't a standard response? I'm on monthly direct debit and heard nothing.

If the players are sitting around doing nothing, on a couple of hundred grand a year, they should hit the phones and call members up and see how they're going and have a chat.

I'd love to get a call from George or someone

what else are they gonna do? Play fort nite all day?

get 'em up to grimesys stomping grapes and mail members a bottle of 'lost year shiraz' , 'Dont Argue Durif' or 'norm smith Nebbiolo''

theres an infinite number of cheap cool things they could do.

If they're not getting paid, yeah, let 'em take to the couch and instagram their dog all day. but if they're getting paid, keep 'em working.

Ive got no doubt the club will be working like borrowed horses on ideas to keep members engaged and positive.

tough gig without games of footy,

but I hope there's some creative people who kept their jobs.

Yes requested a hold

fair enough Stig.

that's why I hope theres a couple of good creatives going hard to get some tiger love and hope in the mail.

won't take much to keep those with discretionary funds, but it wouldn't take much to lose 'em either.

My primo memberships are perilous even in the best of times. If I dont get the credit card statement out of the letterbox before mrs.EZ, my tigerland visa could be cancelled quicker than Dusty's Dads'.

Everyone will be in a different position , from my point of view I pay $300 a year for my RFC membership I wont be asking for that money back. I have been a 25 year member and happy to make that as my donation for the year.

I also pay $1000 a year for my AFL membership for me and my kids , if we can not go to a game and watch a game live for the season I will ask one of 2 things

  • happy for the AFL to keep the money but that would be pro rata into my 2021 membership
  • Or I will ask for a refund for the 2020 season

just wondering if anyone who selected "donate money to benefit the club" has lost their job or had their salary cut this week and now needs to recoup some money?

I'll be donating mine but I can totally understand those who want or need a refund. Some, I am sure, have paid a lot of money for family members and extras such as reserved seats .
