Chol Caddy Ross for Lynch Bolton Prestia

IMHO we will pick our best 22.

Saldo is in our best 22, Chol is not, so we play 1 ruckman,
G is asking who else would miss if Soldo was fit.

Interesting question. It would have to be one of rioli george and aarts, with bolton moving into the fwd line. most likely one of aarts or rioli as george hasn't been dropped in 4 years.

That is a good question. Sorry G

Maybe even though Soldo is better than Chol, maybe with everyone available Soldo would miss out.

I just think the 15 min qtrs changes things.. alot

To add and he's not getting many mentions, but next man in for most outs (wing or any defensive player) during finals is Markov ILO.
If one of our small backs miss, Markov comes in. If Grimes, Astbury or Balta miss it would be a tough choice between Oleg and Broad.
I doubt he will come in to play up the ground. He hasn't played there at AFL level for a couple of years.

Ross, Caddy, Aarts. All desperately stiff.

Rioli had the most sprint efforts for us, and the most repeat sprints on the ground. The equal most F50 tackles, and was equal 4th for us for score involvements.

Aarts spent less time on the ground than everyone except Edwards, Nank, Cotch and Caddy. Had one tackle. I reckon he leads the team in holding the ball frees against, a couple per game. (He's behind only Stack and Soldo for average frees against.) He's behind Rioli and George for average pressure acts, behind Rioli for tackles. I reckon one of those three go out, and it's almost a raffle.

It's nitpicking, but that's how tough the call is. I won't be at all surprised or disappointed if he plays. And I might change my mind in the next fortnight.

Also against Aarts i reckon is his lack of aerial presence. He gets outmarked a lot, and doesn't impact packs, which we like our small forwards to do when they have to.
Both George and Rioli can get up in the air.

Sending players out to lose is a dangerous precedence on the eve of trying to win a premiership ,

We back ourselves to beat everyone and anyone anywhere has to be their attitude or they are admitting there are fragilities

Agree. Doesn't work in practise anyway. Players are fighting each other to be part of the finals team. In my experience going half hearted in a real match increases the risk of injury.

I would have thought if Balta was any sort of ruck option we would have seen it in the Adelaide game. Instead Caddy was used occasionally. You all forget that he was horrible in the ruck. He didn't compete, often just allowed opponent to take the tap. Maybe his extra confidence may help but I don't think its a realistic option. Bolton and Lynch come in and Prestia has to play if fit. Chol is the only obvious out. Aarts (inj) may make the task easier but he plays if fit. Ross is likely to give way but gee he would be stiff (like Markov). Great that we have 4+ players that could come in (Broad, Ross, Markov, Aarts) if we suffer injuries and our team would be just as. good.

Caddy rucked one contest that I saw, he wasn't used occasionally. Dusty rucked one. Reiwoldt one maybe 2. Balta wasn't used because Chol was supposed to be the man. I reckon Balta might be used but who really knows. A few decisions to be made.

Despite the angst and different viewpoints actually think it is a very clear cut call and Niko has nailed it.

Mabs unfort can't be trusted and will miss. The three smalls up front always play when fit (the calls for Rioli or George to miss completely overlook what makes us great). Zero chance. Aarts through performance is also in that boat now ILHO. Like Pickett and McIntosh on the wings only injury would see us compromise the full ground defensive coverage they provide.

Lynch makes Caddy obsolete up front and shame to miss again but Ross is a mid too many with Shai and Meatball back.

Balta can be ruck relief a few mins a qtr and DTLD means he can be unleashed full time there in Nank goes down (touch wood).

Done.
It's hard to disagree, B. But Prestia and Bolton back gives us an excess mid, so I reckon Shai and Shedda will split time forward.

I know Aarts gets up the ground at times, but he's more stay at home than the frenetic up and back of George and Danny. A resting mid can take that spot.

Yes Mabs shot himself in the foot with that performance but his only saving grace may be that Lynch's return changes the dynamic. He won't get the best defender like Talia who towelled him. We've gone with a two ruck structure all year. Will we change it now?
I was leaning towards dropping Chol but have had second thoughts for the reasons you outline.

Chol dragging the third best defender away from Jack and Lynch could make all the difference between one of them kicking 1 or 2 or getting a bagful. And left alone by the third defender he could get a bunch himself. Doesn't need much of it does Chol - is an exceptional kick for goal.

Also agree with leaving Balta in the backline permanently. He's working on his chemistry with DTLD and has enough to worry about.

Chol doesn't need to win ruck contests - just compete, do some of the dirty ground ball work too and make himself a marking target around the ground. We've seen him do this - he just has to bring it game day. If he does he's a difference maker.

A monster game by Chol sends shivers down the back of all oppo coaches. Putting Broad into the ruck does not. Imagine trying to put a game plan together to counter Chol if he starts clicking regularly.

There-in lies the problem.
He doesn't send shivers down the back of oppo coaches; he sends them down Tiger supporters backs.
Chol failed his audition on Saturday, as he had in his previous two games.
No body on body physical pressure in aerial contests => inability to bring ball to ground.
Playing from behind when down forward, and slow to react when it didn't come in handed to him on a platter.
No urgency and little impact at ground level.
His one impact effort was an athletic one-hander and sweet conversion which highlighted his attributes, and also how rarely they were seen when he had so much to play for.
Its a big risk taking this enigma into finals.
Admittedly, one that we may have to take.

I dont think anyone here is wanting anything more than this though. This IS what we want. Chol failed in delivering this on Saturday and as others have mentioned, in his previous game too. Huge risk taking someone as inconsistent as this into a final.

Yep. Chol failed to impact against the wooden spooner - I don't have a lot of faith he'll improve very much in a finals game. Maybe as third tall with Lynch back he'd have a better chance, but even so.

Just have no confidence but like many of us , we share the same fears, but if Dimma goes again with him I guess he knows the player more than us.

chol ,ross, caddy out
in prestia,bolton, lynch.
no reason why jack or lynch cant do some ruckwork in forward line, got to remember the 16 minute quater is really only 3 quaters,if coming up against a grundy or nic nat would tell balta to do some ruchwork in the backline.

Its a risk to run with just Nank as ruck and i don't like the idea of Astbury/Balta/Lynch doing extended rucking stints. He also provides backup to Lynch if his hammy pops. Chol just might produce a 2 goal performance that is the difference. His ruck work is pretty good, seems to have a good relationship with Shai in there.

Fascinating to see which way the selection committee go, they don't get many wrong.

I’m the same MD.

Madness allowing Jack or Lynch anywhere near ‘rucking’ . Thought makes me feel sick in the guts.

Chol is a totally different proposition when both Lynch and Riewoldt are playing. This is when he is most damaging.

Also those wanting Balta to pinch hit in the ruck havent been watching very closely. The defence is the only part of the ground that remains constant during the games. Its all about structure. Hardwick will not be experimenting with this by throwing Balta in the ruck.

IMO Chol will play.

Simple question really. Does having Chol in the team make us better or worse?

50/50 Baloo.

Smoking makes good points .
A few of us want Balta back as he is different to Astbury and more rebounding penetrating kick.

That backline ( back 7 is awesome ). Balta hopefully clicks next game.

Agree Chol played his best as 3rd tall/backup ruck. Can't go in with one ruck, plus don't want to upset the balance of the defence if we don't have to .

On Jake Performing Aarts.

He's had a very good year. Its easy to mount a case hes been our best small forward.

who would have thunk?

He rarely gets caught, but when he does, he really gets caught.

a bit like Dusty In that respect, all or nuthin'.

He has a great double act going with Big Tom.

He'd be very, very stiff to be dropped.

having said all that, and its a lot like the Oleg conundrum,

If I had to rank who I want on the ground in the last quarter in a tight prelim,

it goes 1. George Castagne 2 D.Rioli 3. J Aarts.

maybe thats just reputational, historical and thereby, fallacial.

Maybe Performing Aarts is the man of the moment.

and moments win premierships. we'll now im sounding disturbingly like Alastair Lynch :vomit

Simple question really. Does having Chol in the team make us better or worse?

it is a simple question,

but the answer can only be complex

A: It depends which one

1. Oxycontin Mabior, or 2. Espresso Martini Marbior
