The proposal to change from Jan 26 isnt driven by denying that a British colony was started in 1788.
It doesnt deny that murders massacres etc were carried out as part of the colonisation.
It doesn't seek to deny the shame of colony or whitewash the history.
Its driven by recognition that people lived in this country before 1788. And their offspring are Australians, one of us mob.

I still cant understand how those wanting to change are in denial.

There are 365 days to choose from.
Jan 26 causes heartbreak, as will some other dates. Or are already taken. But smile me if we cant choose 1 from the 350 days

You people are obsessed with the negative aspects of colonisation! You should think more about the amazing heritage of stable government, rule of law, freedom and prosperity it has lead to. That did not happen without 26th Jan 1788! That what you must deny to change the date.

The idea of just picking some random day as your national day is so ludicrous it beggars belief. It makes a mockery of that which it seeks to celebrate. Furthermore the outraged would be outraged regardless of which day it is.

Always nice to have a stable government, backed by the rule of law, organising the massacres, stealing your country, stealing your children, denying you rights for the first 179 years of settlement. I'm sure that provides piece of mind.

We do need a date which means something, I pointed to the article by Stan Grant earlier. I thought he made a good point: we can have a day when we deserve it, when we have a treaty with the first Australians.

Some of you should watch this:

probably as ludicrous as picking a random day to celebrate a fat guy from up north with a big beard delivering presents, or celebrating an old English woman's birthday on a date that is not her birthday and is not even the same date every year, or having a public holiday for a horse ray so thousands can get drunk.
We celebrate Australia Day on the date a bunch of criminals were dumped on our shores.

and your dismissal of those who object to the date as "the outraged" does not support your argument at all.

Lets celebrate the truly wonderful aspects of this country.
And lets do it by including all Australians and include celebrating the indigenous history too.

No need to deny the history of jan 26. It was a stepping point in our history, but so was Cooks voyage, or the rum rebellion (when the governor was illegally disposed).

Pick a random day, or pick a day of historical importance.
You posted that there were only 2 days available. I countered that there are many days to choose from. Some are special.
Lets pick March 15
The first test. Without an Ashes series we wouldnt be Australian

March 15 is a good option. Feb 20 is probably a great option too.

Or we could celebrate days to have led Australia to become a more inclusive society, such as the day women were given the right to vote, or the day Australian acknowledged that the country wasnt empty when the first criminals landed on our shores. we could choose the date the "white Autralia" policy officially ended or we could choose any other number of dates that have led Australia to be the country it is, a multi-cultural, (relatively) inclusive society.

Can we declare ourselves a Republic before the end of the year and have it in place starting 20/2/2022?

The annual migration of the Christmas Island red crab. Happens on the 1st rain of the season. Could be in October or November or even December.

I think all these nutty suggestions for alternate national days are just making my point for me.

The vapidity of them makes me think you’d all be quite happy to abolish the day. A bit sad really.

Your arguments appear to suggest you need Australia Day to be celebrated on the anniversary of the first convicts landing, and if Australia Day was not celebrated on that day your love of Australia, or your experience of being Australian would be diminished. A bit sad really.

Good point.

There should be no issue with changing it for those desperate for an "Australia" day. And those that do prefer to keep it on the arrival of the first fleet should not be against telling the Aust story warts and all. Include the massacres that occurred and the racism that has been experienced by indigenous since that arrival.

Sorry you don't get to put words in my mouth. I have never made a statement remotely like this!

I did not say you said it, I just said your posting makes it appear that way.
But clearly I was wrong and you dont need Australia Day to be celebrated on the date the convicts landed, and your love of Australia, and your experience as Australian wont be diminished if the date was changed, so there should be no issue changing the date. Good to hear.
