And let’s not forget the politics as well…….The AFL is a business now Jim. There’s your problem/s right there. It’s gone from being a nurturative enterprise to a ruthless corporate one.

A Tasmanian team would have to play 12 games in those conditions. Not 2 or 3.Only 2 or 3 games, but its a fair point, Ballarat is colder than half of Tassie.
Heh heh heh….we’ll can it bloody hurry up then Casper!!!! The last three weeks here have been insane. This is all very shortsighted. By 2040 Tassie will be a temperate paradise while Melbourne has the climate of either Cairns or Alice Springs and SE Qld is underwater. Tassie will have a population in the millions and boat people will be arriving by the day from unliveable hellholes like Sydney and Perth.
Of course, no one will give a *smile* about footy anymore.
I made that point re Ballarat, maybe you're right, but I'm not convinced. It is a factor, but it can be managed. There is what 25-30-odd Tassie players now? (I'm guessing), almost a lists worth. Some of them would be happy to be out of there, some would be happy to go home. Plenty of non-tas players would be fine there for 10 years to carve a career. 11 games in Tassie v 11 games in Geelong isn't a dramatic difference. Just like in the real world, some people are happy moving and trying new things for livelihood, some people pine for home and wont.A Tasmanian team would have to play 12 games in those conditions. As an extension of that, do you not see problems with keeping young interstate talent ? Is the young gun from WA, Brisbane, Shepparton, Melbourne that you drafted gonna be all that inclined to wanna stay in cold, little ole Hobart for any longer than the minimum 2 years Snakes ? Travelling up and down to Launceston and around the state ? You reckon the GC has problems on that front. It’s got 1 million people in that corridor with glorious beaches and 22 degree weather for 6 months of the year and still has issues. That’ll be amplified for a Tasmanian team Snakes.
The list of issues is extensive Snakes.
But 25-30 Tasmanian players drafted to the system over a dozen years doesn’t mean anything Snakes. You have to have the best talent you can acquire from around the entire country to be successful and compete. Brisbane isn’t made up of 25-30 Queenslanders.I made that point re Ballarat, maybe you're right, but I'm not convinced. It is a factor, but it can be managed. And Tassie is getting cool.
GC has the best weather in the world and they struggle to keep players.
Its a factor, but nowhere near a dealbreaker IMO.
I don't think you read the post. I was just making the point that Tassie will have a local critical mass of players far higher than the NRL states, 10 or maybe 15? I see that as an advantage, you apparently see it as a disadvantage, fine. But 25-30 Tasmanian players drafted to the system over a dozen years doesn’t mean anything Snakes. Half the Geelong team lives in Melbourne and the other half are only 60 mins away from a world class 5 million metropolis.
The Geelong comparisons (and the Jackjumpers) are so far off beam it’s not funny.
I Know exactly what your saying but you can’t rely on that. The production line is very very limited. It’s not like WA or SA or even Queensland or NSW that pump out players because of their population.I don't think you read the post. I'll say it again, not all players have to be in a metropolis, and even some who do will be fine plying their trade elsewhere for a footy career. I reckon you could make up a decent side, maybe 2, of country boys who will be happy to go home to the bush once their senior career is done. Its not like its Siberia, climatically or geographically. That Geelong comparison I made was in regards to the weather, and the weather only. 12 games at KP v 12 games in Tassie, is it really that different climate-wise? Taking out all other factors?
No I'm not, I'd be interested to hear. I know QLD is on the rise, but dunno how much.I Know exactly what your saying but you can’t rely on that. The production line is very very limited. It’s not like WA or SA or even Queensland or NSW that pump out players because of their population.
When you say critical mass v the NRL states are you aware of how many more players come via NSW or Queensland v Tasmania now ?
Someone - might have even been Nobets - posted it the other day. Figuratively It’s like a small handful the last 10 years v dozens in NSW and Queensland due to the growth of the game and the academies. No I'm not, I'd be interested to hear. I know QLD is on the rise, but dunno how much.
I don't usually agree with the scum bags but yeah No New stadium no club.
Let's not hide away from this is an entire state club not just a city wanting a club.
Do it properly, if that's for 2030 or 2040
Get it right. Don't bring in a new club if it's going to be on life support after 5 yrs..
Make sure it is cashed up and a destination club for young kids wanting to go there.
Don't make them play on open grounds that are -5 degrees in the winter.
The Tassie Devils.
Ground Devils Stadium Hobart
Capacity 40k.
I think you're projecting a lot of emotion on the Gil. He'd do it in a heartbeat if he thought there was money in it. I think Gil WANTS to do it, we all WANT it - but the business case is pretty crappy to be honest. There's not enough people and the ones there are decentralized. There's almost no corporate base and with that not much prospect of either big sponsors or big corporate box sales revenue. And unlike GWS or GC, there's no real population growth or potential to win new fans. Travelling fans won't be interested, it's difficult to reach and cold. There's no stadium of note. As you said, there's not a lot of incentive for TV rights based on massive viewership increases.
The idea that the evil genius Gil is somehow undermining it is overestimating how much he needs to. There's no commercial incentive, Presidents don't want it, and unless the Tassie Government stumps up, there's no infrastructure. It may well be financially viable to get by, but it's hard to see it contributing to profits.
If it happens, and I hope it does because Tassie deserves a team, it will be purely because people including Gil WANT it, even though it's illogical.
The AFL are *smile*.They were appalling to work with, you couldn’t trust them, they were highly unprofessional, manipulative, self interested and unaccountable - and this culture existed for at least the 6 years I was involved in international sport development.
True I want a club in tassie.Hey zips - can you find a date when it got to -5 deg in Hobart. This weekend is a shocker weather wise, but I think this southerly low is hitting Melb as well, we have snow on the mountain now and it may snow down to 200m tonight and I can guarantee you it won’t get to -5 in the city. It will be lucky to get to zero tbh.
Why capacity of 40k for a stadium - that won’t work - how long have the cats had a 40k seat stadium - zero years from memory.
The stadium is a ruse - Blundstone arena is fine, it is of standard to host test matches and AFL matches now, what’s changed.
The AFL have changed the goal posts, thats what’s changed.

Essendon and Norf. We could get them both up to ‘mediocre’ level I think. This is not all about money. If everything was all about money then there would be no money in a football code limited to one small country miles from anywhere, if it was only about money we would all be playing that Johnnie come lately game they call association football - far more money in that.
This is about culture, it is about community, it is about the vibe - Tassie needs a football team.
The best way to do this would be to remove one of the current teams and that will mean a Victorian team unfortunately, or maybe merge 2 Victorian teams.

It's only rained twice since I came up to the Northern Rivers in December - the first time for 61 days and the second for 47 days.Heh heh heh….we’ll can it bloody hurry up then Casper!!!! The last three weeks here have been insane.
Chimpley reckons the records show you have to go back to 1949 (when he was born) before you can find a colder 3 week stretch.
Hmmm. Be careful with foot rot then. It's only rained twice since I came up to the Northern Rivers in December - the first time for 61 days and the second for 47 days.
The skies have finally cleared and the last week the days have been glorious. Not a cloud in the sky. 20 degrees (22 forecast for Wednesday). The nights are freezing but we're all happy to live with that trade-off.
He might if they were the platy pussies?Yeah, and most people who go there are from interstate or overseas. Hard to see porn loving Engle Strindberg from Germany going to see the Tasmanian Platypuses play at Bellerive Oval in the middle of Winter.
