DRAW 2023

Is that inside word? It would be a strange decision I think, the showdowns already sell out and have the entire state focussed in the build-up. In magic round the focus will be hugely diluted.
Nah zero inside word and with the afl obviously nothing is certain with common sense..

But how could they possibly justify giving port and crows an extra home game ahead of everyone else?

Surely the other clubs wouldn’t put up with that?

Yeah just looked it up and it’s been announced… what a joke people are fine with the SA teams getting an extra home game over everyone else…
Not sure about your mathematics there. I think there's been two showdowns every year ever since Port joined the AFL. Got no bearing on whether or not it is in a "magic" round. With 23 games home vs away will be either 12-11 or 11-12 for everyone I would think.

If they had the showdown in magic round every club in the afl would be 11-11 as always and a neutral game..

Now some clubs will have an extra genuine away game

Probably a good time to push an old agenda of mine… cutting quarters to 18 minutes, half time to 12 minutes and shortening the running time of games from about 2:35 to 2:10.

Magic round is logistically much more difficult to run due to the longer running time of AFL games, compared to NRL that has a running time of about 1:35. There is no way you could play 4 games consecutively on a single day in the same stadium with a running time of 2:35.

Additionally, an extra game each will add to wear, tear and exhaustion of players and has the potential to decrease the quality of the finals series.

An extra game also makes the season drag on for even longer for teams that are out of finals contention and will increase the likelihood of meaningless junk times over the last 2 months of the season. This is why I have long endorsed the shortening of the season, not lengthening it.
I'm okay with shortening games, knock off 5 minutes a quarter for the 23 rounds now - 20 minutes X 23 rounds = 460 minutes - is akin to nearly four less games but still playing the full amount of games. Playing 20 minutes less a game, maybe save a late injury or two from happening as well.

Does that suit you better? I can't stand there's only 17 NFL rounds and five weeks off playoffs - a 22 week season, 30 weeks without football.

It would drive me and I'd reckong millions here nuts a 17 game season, 4-5 weeks off finals and then 30 weeks Waiting Waiting Waiting man!!

So I think around 25 minute quarters instead of 30+ gives them four less games in terms of minutes played, U good with that?

Reading some of the discussion very interesting guys, good stuff. Here's my ten cents worth.

No Showdown for me, but if it was a Port-Suns, Adel-Giants they might be two of the three games at the Barossa or wherever those three other games would be played at. Then they'd get the SA teams to play elsewhere, no AO home advantage, it would be a sellout and give people at those places a chance to see the SA teams live in their neighbourhood.

Can't imagine they'd want the bigger clubs teams travelling to SA and not be in Adelaide for the whole 3-4 day football extravaganza. The locals could drive to the Barossa Saturday an hour's drive away and be back home the same day and still go and see games at Adelaide Oval the other three days.

Interstate fans, I'm not booking a day or two in Adelaide then a day or two in Barossa then back again and home, way too expensive. You'd surely have to pick the lowest travelling fan groups to play those three games out of the Adelaide Metro area.

Shortening the qtrs is nothing but a massive furphy. They used to be 25 mins plus time on that mostly added barely another five minutes to qtrs. Then due to umpire arse waggling, nominations n traffic directing etc the qtrs gradually got longer. So the AFL in it's consummate wisdom shortened the qtrs while adding in more delays n time wasting to ensure the broadcasters got more n more advertising time in for every goal scored. So now we have 20 minutes of playing time and at least ten minutes of time on every qtr, sometimes even more time on depending on how the game unfolds or a major injury issue.

The game time doesn't need trimming, the delaying *smile* n faffing around by those in charge could do with a serious haircut though. 30% of game time is wasted crap.

Agree with that, nominations, blood rule and waiting for the light after a goal is wasted time.

The logical course for me is to get to 20 teams and play a 19 round season with a split round bye system to push it to 21 or 22 weeks.

Have a wildcard first week of finals for teams 7-10 while the top 6 get a break and then play the normal top 8 system.

Nah, if you finish 9th or 10th, tough shitty, you don’t deserve another chance. I reckon already the 8th team most years is making up the numbers and the wildcard has the potential to be like that x pre season crap they trialled a while back, it’s so gimmickie.

"Wildcard" is a nonsense term. What you are suggesting is a final 10. which is fine but just call it a "final 10".

if my memory serves me right one of the reasons the finals increased to 8- which at that stage was more than 50% of the teams- was to allow for the inequitable fixture. again

and the idea they currently have of deliberately trying to give weaker teams easier fixtures and good teams hard ones is nonsense IMO. It is the AFL not u9s, trying to have an even competition by salary caps and drafts etc is one thing, trying to have an evener ladder by deliberately manipulating the draw is another.

OK, but that doesn’t change my opinion on this. In fact, I would double down and let the clock roll for 3 seconds for every stoppage.

If you want the game to be bigger and better than ever in 100 years time, or perhaps even grow it in new markets, we need to shorten the match running time. WE all agree 16 minute quarters in 2020 was too extreme. 18 minutes is the right number.

For the life of me, I don’t know where team 20 is coming from. For mine, Darwin, Cairns or the ACT are not realistic options. The only option remotely close to being viable is a 3rd team in WA.

But if we were able to get to 20 teams, play each other once, perhaps have a magic round to make it an even 20 games, then expand the finals to a 10 team format (2 x McIntyre final 5 system), then I would say that’s probably it the next 30-40 years.

It's just a mechanism to keep TV happy while giving the higher ranked teams a week off.

So we play a 19 round season to eliminate less than half the teams? Nah.

You need a week off before the finals so teams don't manipulate sides in the last week and you need something to show on TV.

Wildcard game would keep an extra couple of spots alive and drive interest in more games later in the year for the lower teams.

We could even add a wild card round for the bottom 8 teams on the pre finals break n let them play for the right of earliest pick in that years draft. Might help eliminate some of the end of season tanking.

Tell that to the Americans, the average gridiron game (4 x 15 minute quarters) goes for 3 hours and 12 minutes.

30 minute quarters is how long our game takes, I see no reason to shorten them at all, they were already shortened to 20 minutes plus time on, no need to go further.
