FIFA World Cup 22

Beautiful goal by Neymar. Messi's assist even more so. Soft penalty though, or at least very harsh punishment for a slight touch on the boot in what did not really look like a goal-scoring threat.

Would love to see the little genius rewarded with the Cup but I've otherwise never warmed to the Argies, and I think they lack the pure athletic power of others (no black players).

France firm favourites now I think.

Cracking pair of games.
I do worry the World Cup is going to lose a little of its magic by expanding.
Firstly it is going to be very difficult for any decent teams to miss, so the qualifying tournaments lose a bit of their excitement.
Then if they expand the knockout stage to 32 teams, again they lose some relevance as the chances of a team like Germany missing become very slim.
But if only the top team in each group go through there is likey to be more dead rubbers on the group stages.

But i get money- and exposure- wins out.

I can't stand the argies, bunch of whinging Primadona's that don't know how to win gracefully. Even Messi (who is very likeable when he plays for Barca) becomes instantly more dislikable when he plays for Argentina, and I think he actually changes how he plays. He doesn't tend to roll around, faking crap playing for Barca, contra that to when he ran into Timber earlier and went down as if Timber had shot him in the head!!

Can 't stand them, don't want them to win. This pretty much sums them up too, Otamendi is hardly a kid doing something stupid either, you expect more from your leaders. Compare that to Modric, who didn't gloat after Croatia had knocked out Brazil, in fact he sought out Rodrygo (who missed the 1st penalty), went and gave him a cuddle and some advice (they are club team mates).

I think whoever wins the England v France game tonight, probably firms as favourites to win the Cup (please, please, please be England).

Same thoughts about the Argies posh. Go Pommies......if they get through the French.

I only want the Argies to win because I used my tenner at 100-1 with Betr on them.

Imagine an Argies-Poms final. Messi and another bloke warmed up their handball skills this morning (how did Messi not get a yellow??)

I am conflicted. I backed Argentina to win pre tournament but clearly the most unlikeable team.

You did really well getting them for 100-1. No idea why they were that low on the betting slip.

I had them as pre-tournament favourites to win it, but doesn't stop me despising them haha

Argentina have always been one of my most hated teams and I really hope they don't win it.

It was that Betr promotion. You could get $10 on any one team at 100-1, ditto the 2023 AFL flag and the Melbourne Cup.

I think England will win this and I will not be suprised if they win it reasonably easily.

Mbappe is clearly a gun player, but England have arguably a tougher defensive duo in Walker and Trippier than he has faced at international level before. I think they can hold him, and if they do, the French are likely to struggle. Walker in particular has done OK against him in the Champions League.

I just like the evenness and resilience of the English team. They have a number of players who have shown that they can take chances at this level and so far this tournament they have played a really controlled brand of football. The French very clearly rely on Mbappe or Giroud to score, and Grizemann to set it up.

Giroud is a very dangerous striker in the box, but I don't see him having that much impact from further out. If Bellingham, Foden and Rice can control Grizemann ability to set up attacking moves, Giroud is going to struggle to get good looks at goal.

I suspect that for France to win, Tchouameni is going to have to score or at the very least, show a creative side to his game that I haven't seen so far this tournament. Great runner with the ball, but likely to have to do more here.

You were right about Tchuameni Streaker

England screwing up penalties in the World Cup is such a constant.

I can imagine the UK papers if the score ends like this.

Typical end to a not so typical end game from England. Lose on penalties without the game even going to penalties.

Its a strange feeling, in so many of these later games in tournaments, we've just been outclassed by the other teams, technical skills were much better, ability to keep and control the ball were much better, but today was different. We were the better team, controlled the game but didn't take out chances, France did so well done to them. That cross from Griezmann was world class but Stones should have done better, it was his side of the centre defense, didn't go for it and Giroud was in between the 2 centre halves. Lloris was very good too, so in the big moments they were just better than we were but France are not an unbeatable force.

BTW - that Brazilian ref should be following his team home after this game, awful performance. Missing clear free kicks, even the 2nd penalty for England, it was a dumb foul by Hernandez but was as clear as they come, how do you not give it? Much like the foul on Saka to the build up to their goal, the foul on Kane that went to VAR in the first half, it was a clear foul and clearly outside the box, foul on Saka in the 2nd half just outside the box again not given, then a tiggy toughwood free to France.

Disappointed today as I truly believe we were good enough to win the tournament.
