Andrew 'Mini' McQualter

Hard to make big changes in a hurry mid season. If he achieves anything this year it will be evolution. I hope he goes back to looking for players' strengths and playing to them. Every player, every team, has weaknesses. You work on weaknesses but you also try to play to strengths.

Lot of work to be done, the game always moves on and our strategies from 2017 to 2020 were always going to be developed, evolution is a given. To turn it around now will take time, will take recruiting the right players, recruiting the right coaches and some imagination.

McQualter has a chance to show something of his wares, we'll see more as the season continues and whether he can be seriously considered to take over permanently.

Agree 100%, the issue is I think other teams have taken that style and improved it, which has left us behind.

Teams like Collingwood are using the high pressure, half back charge, gain territory at all costs type of style we had success with but they have taken it up a level by adding things like a tempo that allows them to defend while they have the ball for example.

My wonder is if McQualter has the next level in him as well or if he is just going to keep rolling out the Hardwick blueprint.

with the top sides and particularly Collingwood using an adaption of our gamestyle, then reasonably we should be looking to tweak our style, not completely overhaul it.
For Mini the challenge is to find the right tuning and imo address the inherent failure modes such as the heavy flood ie games where we have territory and high number of I50s but cant score goals.

For posters the challenge is to accept how we'll be playing. Why would we strip everything down and change from finals footy?

Richmond insiders believe McQualter is the man to beat to retain the job for 2024 given his mix of man management, tactical acumen and strong relationship with players.

In fact some Richmond figures would be surprised if he was beaten for the job next year.

Tigers CEO Brendon Gale says the club wants to find the next Damien Hardwick to coach the club for the next 10 years.

But with McQualter putting in such an impressive early audition the Tigers are in an excellent position with their coaching search.

If they can find a coach with better credentials than 36-year-old McQualter then an outstanding figure will have emerged.

Yet he has provided a seamless transition from the Hardwick era with a fighting win over GWS and a 10-point loss to white-hot Port Adelaide as the Tigers kicked 9.13 to squander their chances.

Going back and looking at the numbers for all the other key stats, there is no way we should have won that game. Anyone looking at the numbers in isolation would have assumed an easy 5+ goal win to the Giants.

This was more about GWS not being able to finish the job than anything McQualter was doing in the coaching box.

All that being said, looking forward to watching what he does over the rest of the season - if he can do something about our delivery into the forward line, eliminate the dumb turnovers in dangerous areas, and implement the run-10-boot-60 Balta Rule (apologies to the poster I've stolen this from - it's too good not to plagiarise), then I'll be happy.

Not surprising figures given the problems in our forward line.

I'm following the Mini. Don't fix what ain't broke. If the players are feeling comfortable, give him the job.

Club has to do due processes no matter what we hear or see in Mini interviews with other potential coaches has to be done.
