Bring on 2024

I’d like to see a more adventurous style of footy. We used to be the best at it, now GWS and Collingwood are. We’ve gone to playing a stodgy style of footy (with some very poor skills)
On this (kind of), we also seemed to run away from the mantra of getting players to play to their strengths.

Let's bring that back too!

Yze has stated that he will be working towards making the Tiges one of the hardest teams to play against, and for the players to have clarity around how they are to play.

I’m excited about what this will look like and how long the players will take to understand and deliver the ‘tweaked’ playing style.

Because if the team becomes more defensively sound, (some of it through effort and some of it through game plan) then staying in games will become more common place, (like Collingwood) and will allow players that aren’t highly skilled to contribute meaningfully and consistently (like Collingwood).

With the better players then being able to do their thing (apologies, like Collonwood).

Then once the game plan starts to work and starts to deliver results the joy’ and ‘connectedness’ and ‘love’ and all the other flowery language will return because a winning team ‘is a happy team’.

This is why I’m starting to wonder if we are in fact in as deep a wilderness as many think we are after witnessing what Collonwood have done with half a team of 30+ players and a bunch of role players.

From the little of heard from Yze it sounds like he knows what’s up; bring on 2024!

For me, 2024 will be defined by the youngsters such as Nyuon, Ralphsmith, Dow and Cumberland who are yet to fully prove themselves. Gibcus and sonsie have A grade potential in my opinion.

Not Sonie
Don't see it
And Gibcus might take another 12 months to fully recover
He is meant to be back this week from Dubai

dunno about that but have a feeling we aimt going to win many games next season
First problem is speed.
Second problem is a run of luck with injuries.
You can’t play chaos without swarming speed.
Thats why we have been playing hesitant stop start football.

The nobs at AFL HQ have killed off chaos ball. If anyone wants to see this back, I think you are going to be disappointed.

I think we saw lots of it on Saturday...

Yeah I don't think chaos ball is dead, its just changed a bit. The focus of the "chaos ball" that we built our premiership dynasty on, was fast ball movement via handball. The Pies do the same from their back half, but they have tweaked it slightly to deal with the stand rule. With the stand rule, you don't need to use handball quite so much, as you gain those extra few seconds from the defending player needing to stand, so they handball out of traffic and then use good kicking skills to move the ball inside 50. The thing for us, is if we could get this to work and had our forward line fit, then we could do very well.

I think the 1 thing thats clear thats dead from our dynasty, is the swarm of smalls, who's primary focus is to chase and tackle. Thats still a part of the game, but they also need to be skilled, Bobby Hill is your prime example.

So we do need to pivot somewhat, but we have the speed in generally the right areas (half back / wing etc and is why I think we can rebound fast. The 1 thing we don't have currently is a Bobby Hill, but I reckon we have enough players there that potentially could play a similar role.

I think this year Dimma (and to some extent Mini) were picking players on reputation, and whilst IMO Jack was still good value for his place (even though he couldn't physically compete as well as he used to as that primary forward), in far too many games, it felt like we were too stagnant in midfield, and I think that was partly due to carrying Cotch somewhat, and the same can be said about Graham.

I think a changed role for Marlion could be a great option for us. Play him in the midfield. He adds the speed, ball winning ability and toughness into that midfield. Cotch is gone, and I'm not sure Graham is best 22 in our current midfield.

Absolutely, but I was thinking also of the passages of play where Collingwood knocked and scrounged the ball forward at all costs out of the centre. Ugly but predictable.
None of that finessing.
Worked a treat for our three amigos ( and Bobby Hill).

Where can we improve. 1. Clearances. 2. Goal kicking. 3. Discipline. All of these can be improved upon without complicated game plans that players can’t remember after 30 seconds. Clearances are about teamwork and skill. Goal kicking is muscle memory and technique. Discipline is mental strength. You don’t need 18 Brownlow medallists to get better in these areas.

I get the feeling the club is a little fractured at the moment, seems to be quiet a few not overly happy at the moment, hopefully over the pre season they can reconnect.

Dimma honeymoon's over. We won 3 in 4 yeah....great achievement....but there's no need to start coasting for the next few seasons.
