Saints play much better with pace and need to fix their transition from defence so are stoked to take with Pick 21.

Pick 21 - Josh Sinn - Sandringham Dragon

Already a good size, and probably slipped due to injury concerns. Was also on our potential list if we kept Pick 9 so stoked to be able to get the same player at 21. Will allow Saints to move Hunter Clark to the midfield.

So, from the Phantom draft just a few passing thoughts.

* Trading the twenties picks the way to go, forget the points, I lost 500 points on the way to getting Rachele but I'm happy with my decision.
* Rachele + NWM/Goater or Sonsie + Butler (happy to debate this but I feel grabbing the best small forward & the best kicking wingman the way to go.
* I like Sonsie a lot but by taking him you miss out on a wingman
* Think we need to go hard for pick 19 or pick 9
* Leaving the medium mid selection for the final pick may bump the other selections to the best available positional talent

Shopping List

1 x clearance specialist - Hobbs (best in Oz for contested work)
1 x midfielder/forward - Rachele (best small forward in the country)
1 x wingman - Wanganeen-Milera (best kicking skills in Australia, genuinely dual-sided)
1 x medium midfielder - yet to be announced but I can see a few names that may slip to our last pick

I think it's a decent haul, you can't have them all & despite my love of Taylor I just couldn't fit him in unless I drop NWM, but that means no wingman for 2021.

Why the importance of a winger within the first round for Richmond? Normally best available the prevailing wisdom early.

Pick 17 will give you a clear shot at a potential A grader, pretty hard to get a wingman later in the draft. I tend to look at things in totality, I think I can get a good medium mid with with 50s pick, I can see some names that should slide but let's see how things unfold. If I take Sonsie at 12 (which I laboured over for many hours) I would need a Judson Clarke type to slide, definitely possible, and I'm not 100% certain about Wanganeen-Milera but having spent a couple of hours yesterday looking at footage I'm willing to give him a go. I think he can negate his speed shortcomings with his agility, it's a bit of Nick Dal Santo dreaming who was also average in the pace department. Now the other appealing thing about NWM is his height, if he grows another few centimetres you are closing in on the Ridley territory, this is a potential role I think he could nail down. Ridley is not quick but is utilised as a rebounding playmaker, that is an upside that appeals to me, so in the end it tipped him over the line against Sinn who has the raw pace. Time will tell I guess but if I nail this pick there's some chance of getting 3 core players which is what this game is all about.

Win/win for both Richmond & St Kilda, well done & just goes to show that it's better to focus on the talent & not the points.

Good stuff, Bully. I’m a big fan of the Hobbs/Rachelle duo. If we can win flags with Rioli/Castagna/Butler imagine what we can do with Bolton/Stack/Rachelle!

Still think we need a couple of talls with the latter picks. Maybe take 4 players at the draft and round up all the leftover Victorian key forwards and bring them in for a December/January tryout.

Or keep pick 83 and use it as a pre Rookie Draft pick for a slider?

It sure was, that worked out perfectly as I don't think the Saints are that far off. I think their forward line is very strong but the difference between their best and their worst is large, and largely down to whether they move the ball fast or slow. Move it quick and they look a million dollars, move it slow they look about 5 bucks. The key thing glaring at me as I looked at their list was the lack of an elite half back. I thought about Fahey too, but the upside with Sinn is hard to look past.

Now I don't think they do this in the real thing, but feel that half back is a glaring weakness for them. They try Paton and Long (both more lockdown) and Sinclair who was good last year, but some real run and carry out of the backline could be what they need to take a big jump forward.

A Hobbs / Rachele 1/2 with our first 2 picks would certainly be a dream return for me.

van Rooyen was the guy I was ready to take but that didn't eventuate so I'll be scrounging in the bargain basement for a tall prospect with a late pick. I think this is the range you might get some seasoned athletes with skill deficiencies, so I'll have a close look at the board and see if there are any diamonds in the rough.

I would think Sinn is their frame at #9, which could be a reach.
Saints need elite talent so doubt that they trade down in real life, but imo it did work for you here

New Giant Tyler Sonsie is with NVM as the best kick in the draft! Then some distance to the rest.
Sonsie also a mid/forward who is capable to play as a medium forward. Lots to like

Crows list manager BigFizz woke up this morning feeling rotten.
Probably from joining Gold Coast at the pub and watching Goldie Days dancing naked on tables.

But he also realised he had misread the boss' email.
He had only read the first line
Dont trade #4
Unless Callaghan is gone and then trade down

I suspect that the real crows might do this. If GWS or Goldie pick Callaghan, then they ship out #4 to a mid first pick and target Rachele. Which explains the chatter about him and AC.

I think I would have taken JVR if he was there as well. I liked him as a swing man for GWS. Good partner for Taylor. Really liked that pairing. I’m getting to the point with JVR were I can’t see a spot it doesn’t make sense. JVR and Balta has me super excited as well. Two big strong competitive beasts locking down our defensive posts. I love the aggression.

Yeah, he will be a very good Astbury replacement, potentially better.

he was nearly my pick, but after drafting The GOATer, I thought I should get a true mid, rather than potentially 2 HBFs. I hope/expect GOAT to be a mid, but he may not.

JVR I love the aggression.

yep. His body wouldnt take short steps running at a bullock.

essendon were absolutely stoked to land him.

History may show EZyT overlooked some good players, but the toughs of the essendon 2021 crop wont be questioned

Rachele is absolutely in that category, 100%, there is no daylight. When Rachele kicks there is usually a score, maximum hurt factor. His low trajectory bullets should be featured in a coaching manual. And all this Lennon & JON talk is making me want to throw up by the way.
Lennon was slow and had the turning circle of the titanic,if u rely too much on the lead I feel in current Afl it's not remotely enough and would give Amiss a pass based on this.
Rachele by talent alone as bully as said as huge talent.
