With the shock receding thanks for your service Alex you will go down as arguably the best key defender the club has ever had and a tiger immortal.

I am not that surprised. He nearly retired last time his contract was up! It is risky resuming playing after an ACL and players are rarely the same again.

Hard to begrudge anything. Just a God. Pardon pun. But a bit selfish. The 3rd flag a little trickier now. Funniest AFL player ever.

Think the Knee might of had something to do with it. Thanks, Champ.

Weird he would go through a whole year of rehab and push himself so hard to try and play in finals and the start another pre season and retire. Is it possible the knee just wasn't feeling right and he may well have done it easily again this year so he thought not worth the pain? Gutted but our defence when to another level this year without him so I don't think our on field will be an issue. More his presence around the place.
To take a positive out of it this all of a sudden gives us a huge chunk in our salary cap to hopefully lure another big fish.

Poor timing, imagine we may have drafted differently if we had known he was retired?

Being a great footballer doesn't exclude you from being a nutjob in real life when religion gets a hold of you. Just look at the Ablett's.

Would not surprise me to see him make a comeback in 2 years time.

From a headless chook early to the greatest Richmond defender ever.
What an incredible journey he has had.
A key reason we broke the 37 year drought & now forever a one club player.
Owes nobody anything. His selflessness to pull out of his quest to get fit for last year's Premiership tilt would have been emotionally draining.
He's had a lot of think time from his serious injury but gave 1000% off field last year to help us win the flag.
I can't thank him enough. Go well Sir Rancealot you bloody legend.

That's not good. Surprised but not surprised at the same time.

Another reason to detest religion.

Who knows what goes on in Alex's head. But to put in all the work, for one final tilt (and I think it would have been no surprise in fact expected for him to retire at end of 2020), only to pull the pin in late Dec.....ya just shake ya head. Goodbye to the FB GOAT.

Just for everyone's reference, here are the 5 stages of grief. Hopefully most of us will reach acceptance by Christmas Day.

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance.
