Some great observations Jack. I wonder who Frank would have gone for from 2017 - 2021 with his first picks if he was in charge?
I think we have reasonable scoop that Frank liked Brett Daniels, Dev! (Best of luck to the young fellow. Can't take a trick atm.)

At least Blair got us refunds for Higlet and CJ.

Funny how most head recruiters do their best work in their early years. Jackson with us, Wells at Geelong, Hine at Collingwood to name a few. Greg Miller coasted on his success with Longmire and Carey for 20+ years.

Maybe early on they are unencumbered with direction and free to pick “best available”? After their initial success, they start getting direction from above to “fill the gaps in the list” and they end up reaching for talent to fit list needs. Or maybe they just get lazy and tired from all the travel and stop putting in the work?

Interesting in the early posts - praise for Geelong’s selection of Parfitt. Doesn’t seem really to have come on.
Parfitt has been injured but is tracking well IMO. Improving every year.

Dunno. We won another flag a couple of years later and it took South another 30 odd years.
Yeah but Jackson, Whale and Teasdale left in 75, and we had won the flag in 73 & & 74..................

No this is just probability. Recruiting is a coin toss (the best go at 60% the worst at 40% for example). The gun recruiters are actually just those who have a run of ‘heads’ early in their career. A mythology about them is created, but long term it all trends to the mean.

The ones who start with a bad run mostly get the sack and never have the opportunity to revert to mean.

Yep, Frank & Whale (RIP) didnt hurt too much but Teasdale & a Brownlow medal wow
According to K.B. trading out the Whale was by far the most damaging loss of the three. Whale was the glue that bound the player fabric during that time n K.B. has spent years lamenting that the Whale was traded out.

When did Dudoro do his best work?

It's a great (true) point and there is actually a very simple explanation for it. At least with Wells and Hine.

They both made there rep as the head recruiter. Building premiership lists through the draft. Wells a cut above Hine BTW.

That was there role - rate the juniors and recruit.

What then happened is they both had a change of roles and got "promoted" to List Mgr. This took them both away from there core strengths of spotting/ranking juniors to now encompassing: arranging/approving all trades, scouring oppositions lists, salary cap MgMnt etc.

Both clubs then had a noticeable drop off in the national draft along with questionable trades. All as a result of Wells/Hine not "playing in position".

Interestingly both have recently taken a "step back" to recruitment and what do you know, they are now gunning it again at the draft.

Bottom line, football clubs aren't like normal businesses, and guys like Wells and Hine should be paid more than there (List) Mgr's to deliver what they do best.

And what is best for the club.

We only got rid of him the once, that was when we swapped him, Whale Roberts and Graham Teasdale + 40k to South Melbourne for John Pitura !!!!
Frank the footballer was a rare animal. Short. Light. Could get air and fearless. Smart. Never beaten. Good skills. Elite? Not far off. Or actually elite.

He's never recruited another Frank. I wish he would consult on one.
