Was a pretty interesting statement from Matthews, given his history of violence on the footy field.
I know it was a different time/era but even by the standards of those days, Matthews was often thuggish on the footy field.

the nickname 'Lethal' didn't just reference his footy prowess

Mathews is a big Brisbane supporter. Think he loves Brisbane more then then the hawks

Matthews in his last couple of years would do ten times worse things on the ground.
Pity there weren't cameras at every ground in 1986

Gotta take the good with the bad or you won’t be a champion team. It’s as simple as that.

No way should he tone it down in fear of what someone might say about him in the media. That would be such a loser’s mentality.

Taken in isolation this latest incident is so minor. He very deliberately and very gently places his knee on Howard’s shoulder, and as I’ve said he could argue he was just using it to steady himself as he stood. It’s a message to his opponent to stay down. It’s just that cumulatively it tarnishes his reputation, and because at present the scumbag media are looking for any stick to beat us with, it gives them ammunition.

If we are backing Lynchy, does that make us part of "The Lynch Mob"?
*smile* yeah! Npthing wrong with a snifter of nasty thuggery n agro during a game. Rules have changed massively since the days of hard nuts like Balmey, Bones n Ghost etc crushed opposition players. Now the defenders n taggers get away with niggling n hanging off all game long. if someone retaliates simply coz the maggots won't do their job properly. The retaliator gets suspended n hurts his sides chances. Lynchman simply dishes out *smile* to his opponents first n worries about the results afterwards. Stuff the media hysteria..

I think there is a big irony there.

Years ago you could shirtfront a player, run through a player, give a big bump and that was just part of the game. But if you pushed someone in the back, grabbed them before they had actual possession of the ball, hung off a player while a bounce was taking place etc, you gave away a free kick.

The way they umpire now is just a bit absurd. You can clearly break rules, just look at the number of players in the centre who get hung onto by their tagger at every bounce, the number of players pushing or shoving in the back, the throws, shepherding when the ball is miles away, blocking marking players, etc - it incurs a free sometimes but less often than not.

The game is being adjudicated in such a way as to make it far more congested. Look at old games, players are pushing and shoving, But they're not grabbing each other. At a stoppage there are players distributed around, close but not grabbing. Plus, the forming pack is given about 5 seconds to resolve or a ball up. Now they give them at least 30 seconds of writhing around, then the umpire blows the whistle for a ball up, then the rucks nominate and, finally, after all that palaver, the ump throws the ball in the air.

Plenty of people have said the Lynch thing has been blown out of all proportion. It’s just the salty campaigners who are terrified of us winning another Premiership that keep pushing it.
It’s exactiy what it is , and that he’s a bloody good, player . If he genuinely injured his opponent I wouldn’t be defending him , why I do is that there are many times worse incidents that actually don’t even get called out let alone media attention

There isn't an oppo supporter out there who wouldn't take Tom in a heartbeat at their club.

The hatred stems from fear because he's so damn good & we've got him for another 5 years after this. 5 more years..:p

No doubt in my mind that Tom is the one that can win us the game this weekend.
His form was excellent against the Saints & he should have finished with 5 goals.
Providing we can get enough footy to him he will prove to be the difference.

yep.

If Tom dont get ya, JR will.

Port simply dont have the defenders to cover the two.

neither do Brisbane.

neither do Geelong.

to sooth your nerves, imagine Port with Dixon and Reiwoldt,

Geelong with Hawkins and Reiwoldt

Brisbane with ....., well Lynch and Reiwoldt .... and Hipwood.

like you say Oldy, it was probably his equal best game for the tigers, the other being the '19 prelim.

Its pretty safe to say, Tom is a big game player. Hes played 5 finals, kicked 11 goals, and polled votes in 3

The 2 goals 5 probably made it look less dominant than it really was , they werent bad misses and could easily have been 5 goals 2 , the pleasing thing was he had 7 shots at goal and is in good form at the right time of year
