Political correctness & other nonsensical rubbish

I think the schools are going to have to think about keeping the kids too inactive.

They might develop Deep vein thrombosis.

what about having a kick of the footy? hopsctotch? marbles for crying out loud?

No idea on hopscotch, but I know activities on a number of ovals are being banned because they are not exempt from watering bans, so they are like concrete.

As for marbles, they were banned at my PS back in the 80's. Kids were stealing them and assaulting younger kids for the "cool" marbles, and also some would use them as weapons in fights.

i remember the awful brandy ban of 1976 like it was yesterday!

Don't forget British Bulldogs. Reckon I could have set my clock to the annual ban on that :)

Ive just learnt that if i want to (which i dont) assist with the life saving clubs nipper carnival, I'll need "working with Children accreditation"

For me to stand on the beach to say "that kid came first" i need a police check

Crazy

You try sitting ata park watching your son and his mates play on the swings--mothers sometimes literally run over to grab their kids.it's hilarious.

Thats just started now, and applies to many organizations (govt and private) that have people working with kids.

Not very connected to this issue now, but I understand the old system had a lot of holes in it, and predators were successfully enetering the organizations even with criminal records.

Personally I have no issue with it. If someone wants to work with kiddies (paid or volunteer) its better safe than sorry.

Its scary how quickly the reaction starts. I remember years ago when a few scoutmasters were found to be pedophiles the scouts suddenly started having massive issues finding Dads willing to put their hand up, because they were afraid of the perception being labelled upon them. Another thing these exploiters of kids have done to make our world better  Good news on the recent arrests though, although scary to hear how many accessed the site for the short time it was active.

I agree with the intention.

Just curious as to how this will effect local sporting clubs

Will the Dad that is the umpires escort at the under 10's require a wwcc?
Will the Dad running the sausage sizzle at the local kinder require a wwcc?

Being sans kids, I haven't looked into the new requirements. I know they have been advertising heavily on the radio though, so hopefully effect during transition will be minimal (you would expect some bumps though).

Parents with children who are involved, or are normally involved, in the activity are exempt.

mld
I dont suppose you could find me a quote for that

Sure! From the Working with Children act, Exemptions from Working with Children Act:

27 Volunteer whose child is participating or ordinarily participates in the relevant activity

A parent engaging in work as a volunteer in relation to an activity in which his or her child is participating or ordinarily participates is exempt from a working with children check in respect of that activity.

Example 1

A parent who coaches a school football team in which his or her child ordinarily plays is exempt from a working with children check even if his or her child is not present on particular days due to sickness or some other reason. However, a parent who coaches a school football team whose child plays football for another team in the same school is not exempt from a working with children check.

Example 2

An athletics carnival is being held at a school. A parent of one of the participating children carries out the task of raking the sand in the long jump pit. That parent is exempt from a working with children check even if his or her child is not participating in the long jump competition.

A Sunday Herald Sun survey of schools found:
CARLTON Gardens Primary School has banned cricket bats and removed its monkey bars and climbing equipment.
ST MICHAEL'S Primary School in North Melbourne has banned children playing football and soccer in the schoolyard.
ASCOT Vale West Primary School has banned games deemed "too rough".
ST PETER Chanel Primary School in Deer Park has outlawed tackling in football and soccer to avoid injuries.
Melbourne University researcher Dr June Factor said a primary school banned marbles because of "arguments".
"But for goodness sake how do children learn to resolve arguments if they don't have any?" she said.

Un-bloody-believable. What next? The banning of footy card dealing in case someone offers a cameron ling card and the kid gets nightmares? ::)
Banning physical activity during lunch times and breaks, way to contribute to obesity epidemic some are saying exists

Legends,

This is another example of how far (backward?) our society has become when we have morons introducing such petty and pedantic rules.
While I label these people as 'morons' due to them taking such ridiculous measures...they haven't been helped by the real cretins in this case, that being the judicial system and the judges who, over a period of time, have presided over petty litigation cases and handed down equally ridiculous compensation payments to the so-called 'victims'...forcing the 'morons' to enforce onto the rest of us ludicrous rules that the article you have pasted mentions.

You can thank people like Rob Hulls for the direction this state is taking, for a start.

Becoming like the US in that regard.

Maybe tell them you're an 'artist', I believe they are exempt from the rest of society

Do know it is a sad state of affairs guys but as a human service employee i think, the safer the better. I do understand it takes the whole "Dad or mum wants to help" thing into a more sinister light. I know as a single dad i would much prefer to know that my daughter was being supervised by quality adults out there in the community and in any mandatory institutions she may have to be engaged.

Absolutely dead right.
As someone whose nieces were quietly molested for years by an individual who was regarded by my family as a close (and trusted) friend and by my mother as almost another son – I think any measures that help protect a child’s childhood are worth it, regardless of the inconvenience.
You just never ever know.

It's not the bloke in the park. It's the one in the house.
