Retire / Trade / Delist

Yep, time to plan for the future, which could be as early as next year. We still have some great players and we do need to keep some experience to teach the young players as they develop.

I think it is time for Cotch and Houli to hang up the boots. Riewoldt can have another year.

There are a fair number of young players who are looking to be not up to the standard, but I would keep RCD, Martyn, Ralphsmith, Stack, Mansell, CJ, MRJ, Cumberland and probably a few I have forgotten. They need time to develop.

I'm amazed that on the Baker thread that the mere thought of him not being untouchable at trade time under any circumstances has enraged so many.

So my question is this, as of right now, who are our untouchables? That if someone asks about them we just flat out say

"No, he's never going to be on the table in any trade you offer."

For me, there's only two. Dusty and Bolton (providing he signs). Everyone else you listen and consider the offer.

Baker is a favourite so I'm bias.

I reckon Vlastuin, Grimes, Balta, Lynch, Nank and Edwards would be on my untouchable list too (with Martin and Bolton)...maybe Lambert.

There are heart and sole players, important to the fabric and culture of the club. Club champions.
For mine
1. Grimes.
2. Cotchin.
3. Nankervis.
4. Edwards.
5. Dusty
6. Vlastuin
7. JR8
Then for ability/potential.
8. Bolton.
9. Balta.

At our point in list management cycle any untouchable list will not include those over 31.

They are hardly likely to move anyway

Bulldogs ring and offer Arron Naughton for Balta. Would you hang up on them or at least walk back to the table and consider it?

If anyone ask about Dusty and Bolton I'd just cut them off and say "don't bother", thats untouchable.

Its a good hypothetical internet conversation, but I would say almost our most untouchable would be Nank (compared to possible trade value.)
If the Suns offered King, Rowell, and pick 3 for Dusty we would have to think about it.
Likewise, a young gun and an early pick for Bolton would be considered.

In reality we arent going to push any of our 30+ premiership stars out the door to another club, unless they instigate it.

On Baker, I would be very reluctant, as has been mentioned, he is an incredibly tough, skilled and versatile 23yo. He is the exact age we need, and will help us contend again next year, while still be young enough and good enough to help through a transition if we do spend time not contending. But if we got someone similar age, who is proven, and added more value than Baker than of course we would consider it.

Everyone is trade-able at the right price. However be also prepared to rip the clubs soul out if you have that mentality.

To me, our greatest need is bolstering the midfield. If Bakes, who I admire greatly, cannot play as a pure midfielder and has currency, then I would at least entertain the notion of a mutually beneficial trade.

I dont disagree. We would just want to have a fair degree of confidence that whoever we got was going to be a 10year midfielder for us.

Leppa said it well. Our depth has dropped in the last 2 years.

The likes of Naish, Chol, Ross and Aarts are not AFL standard and when combined with Cotchin, Houli, Riewoldt and Astbury who are done the team is simply not good enough to win games. No team can cover 8 players who aren't good enough to play AFL anymore.

Yes, but in fairness Scoop, Naughton for Balta is not realistically going to happen. With that way of thinking no-one is untouchable in fantasy trade talks. If a team offered 5 first rounders (4 in the top ten) for Dustin Martin you would hang up on them?

Realistically we have at least 6-10 untouchables. Most teams would I reckon.
