Who should be our new recruitment manager?

Speaking to some AFL industry guys yesterday and they all think Chris Toce is the one. Rate him very highly
Geez, Toce has been in decent form of late. Owens, Phillipou, Wilkie, Wanganeen-Milera and Windhager. That’s some haul.

Got to wonder why St Kilda let him go…

Interesting he says in that 2015 video that he was in charge of the Division 2 states (NSW, Qld, Tas, NT). St Kilda didn't draft anyone from those states that year but outside academy players, no one of note was taken by anyone else, so you might say "well left". And he did say he watched more of Jade Gresham than anyone else that year so maybe we can give him a partial credit there.

In 2016 they took Ben Long from the NT with pick 25 when $hai, Parfitt, Lipinski, Fisher, Drew, Sean Darcy, Brennan Cox, Jack Graham and others were still on the board. Uggh.

He still held that portfolio in 2017 so we can't blame him for the top-10 debacle of Clark and Coffield ahead of Naughton/Allen/Balta/Bailey. Like McCartin ahead of Petracca, that's on Elshaug. Do we give him credit for the excellent Ben Paton pick at 46, given Paton was a Bushie (albeit a Vic)?

In 2018 he moved to state recruiting manager responsible for WA and SA, a position he was in through the 2021 draft. In that time the Saints drafted from those states Matt Parker (pick 47, 2018), Robbie Young (67, 2018), Callum Wilkie (RD3, 2018), Jack Mayo (2019 mid-season draft), Tom Highmore (45, 2020), Cooper Sharman (MSD 2021), Wanganeen-Milera (11, 2021), Oscar Adams (51, 2021) and traded in Dougall Howard, Paddy Ryder and Bradley Hill from AFL clubs.

He was also state recruiting manager for Victoria and the Allies from 2019 through 2021. Having traded out of the top end in 2019 to get Hill, from those portfolios they took Ryan Byrnes (52, 2019 - 48 games and counting), Leo Connolly (62, 2019), Jack Bell (RD 5, 2019), Matthew McLeod-Allison (26, 2020), and Max Heath (2021 MSD). No credit for the bargain academy kids Windhager and The Flying Burrito in 2021.

Toce was national recruiting manager for 2022 and 2023. So we give him full credit for Phillipou (10, 2022), James van Es (31, 2022), Olli Hotton (35, 2022), Isaac Keeler (44, 2022), Darcy Wilson (18, 2023), Lance Collard (28, 2023), Angus Hastie (33, 2023), Hugo Garcia (50, 2023), and Arie Schoenmaker (62, 2023). Early days but looks a good haul. I was a fan of Hotton and Keeler at draft time. Wilson, Collard and Schoenmaker are all potential quality bargains and Hastie had big wraps too. Lots of speed in recent years so he's on-trend.

They took Riley Bonnor in the PSD but we can probably blame the list manager for that. Silvagni loves recycling duds.

Why no credit for the academy kids? Just because the Saints had first dibs on them doesn’t mean he didn’t put in the work assessing them.

Most recruiters “ drink their own bath water “
Suggest someone left field
Ex player recently retired out of game I suggest . 😉

Just going by Ross's last few stints, he doesn't really use his draft picks that much, so maybe it wasn't all a one way convo?
Ross Tends to stock up on role playing defensive spuds. Maybe he'll be different this time around, but we used to joke about if you were an 18yo, where would you hate to go, and he was always mentioned. You'd need more afl scouts than u18 if he stays true to form.

Would be great if we could entice Jason Taylor from the Demons.
We should be aiming high to get the best.
No more promotions from within, IMO.

HAWTHORN has lost a key member of its off-field team on the eve of the 2024 campaign, with Josh Vanderloo resigning from the club.

nothing hawthorn have done in last few years jumps out of the page , most recent move to overlook Riley sanders for 170cm Watson was a bold one , accept he wasn’t directly involved , but under his watch

Chris Toce has been mentioned by one of the talking heads. He's interesting. He's one I've had a bit of a look at in the past.

I'll have a look at his record in a bit of depth here later.

He shot the lights out two years ago and has been inspired at other times. I was amazed at how many early picks he lost because they were traded away.
Get Toce.
