He's a live medal chance. Interested in his back story. I assume he's of Sudanese background. I wonder if he was born in Oz or is a refugee/immigrant. Anyone know?

Regardless wish him all the best. When is the final?

All came down to a teacher at his school scratching around, trying to fill a school athletics team from a reluctant student body and one of his mates saying to the teacher that he thought Peter could run a bit.

Thanks PT what a great article and story. Some funny stuff in there and shows you how far some of these refugees and migrants have to come.

“Can you run 400m?” “How far is that?”

“I didn’t really think running was a sport.”

Won his first competitive race and reckons he ran in the wrong lane the whole way!

Great stuff from Peter and also his teacher and her father.

Looking forward to watching him in the final.

Took to the last 8 seconds to get there...... hopefully they can go on fron here.
Yeah they got there in the end but did it hard. Missed 2 free throws late that would have put the result beyond doubt. One with 8 seconds to go and 27 points up. The Ricans got the rebound and jacked up a 3 that was pretty close to scoring. Bloody hell imagine if that had gone in and we won by 24…………

Anyway they got through but they’ll have to improve shitloads to bother the medal round this year.

its a bit cruel, but inevitable to speculate,

but the Nigerian sprinters look like condoms full of walnuts at these games
Can we send Benny Gale over to poach their fitness and conditioning coaches. A lot of our boys could build a few walnuts to my mind.

Nice run by Day.
Yes, it was but is 200 her optimal distance for future medals? She ran 22.56 PB, she's only 21 and been coached for a few years now so how much better can she get? World best this year is 21.61 and a lot of women were ahead of her on times in the semi's today. She had a good reaction time and a good first 20m so she has to improve roughly 6 to 7m to get under 22 sec and be a medal chance. Be good to see how much she improves by Paris 2024 but I'd like to know what she has run for 400m? Perhaps train her endurance for that event.

Problem for refs is it’s all downside for them. No one remembers good calls just the bad ones.
As it should be. They aren’t playing. I don’t remember any of our GF umpires but I remember them being well umpired games. That should be enough. That ref maybe/likely cost the matildas a shot at gold. It’s a massive moment. You see those sort of infringements all the time. It’s the randomness of that decision that *smile* me.

Two of the three Australian men through to the next round of the 1500m. Three very different races, the three heats were.

First race with Oliver Hoare, slow first 500m odd, then gradually quickened up naturally among the whole pack. He ran a perfect tactical race, very aware of his surrounds and qualified comfortably.

Jye Edwards in the second race. What a shamozzle. Very slow heat, with blokes running 5 wide. Got himself stuck in the middle, fellas falling over each other skittling each other onto the track. Didn't get through, finishing 7th in the slowest heat. And possibly may get DQd anyway for upending the Qatari runner late.

Third heat with the Tasmanian, McSweyen. Slow for about 300m, then Mcsweyen decided he didn't want to bugger about risking the carnage of the second race. So went to the front and strung the field out at a really solid pace and qualified with a similar time to Hoare in the first race.

To be fair on Edwards, he did at times (several times) look like he had really good race awareness as to where he was and needed to be, working his way into good positions several times, only to get forced into a *smile* position again. But it was the carnage around him that really cost him. Was probably on a knife's edge as to whether he could have matched the kick speed in the last 300m (he was still in the mix, albeit wavering). But the carnage around him killed his momentum at the point in the race where you are really building up lactic and there was no coming back from there.

Im definitely not an expert on soccer,

quite the opposite.

But my perception of the straya V Sweden,

was that Sam Kerr was cooked and shouldn't have played, and the teenaged indigenous girl who came off the bench and makes things happen,

should have been the go-to fro the outset?

The injured/exhausted champ almost never works anymore.

Bit of trivia, Mary Fowler isn't actually indigenous Australian. A PNG mother and Irish father. Was eligible to represent Australia, Ireland, PNG (and I think I heard, possibly one other through grandparents?), but chose Australia. Has a brother playing U20s for Ireland. But yes, she really added life every game she was brought on. The team went from looking stale, to really having some zing when she came on. Particularly noticed that in the game vs GB.

Yeah, Fowler's heritage is quite mixed but no doubt she's going to be a bit of a star. Here's a good piece on the family The Fowlers

As for Kerr, you don't drop her if she's able to run. She's truly world class elite and can make things happen from nothing. Even if she did nothing but stood still she would have attracted the Swedes best defender to stand next to her. Dropping Kerr would be like dropping Dusty in a semi-final

That Fridolina Rolfo from Sweden is a seriously good player. The goal she scored was fortuitous but she was the only Swede looked dangerous all game. In the first half she struck one that hit the cross bar. Our goalie was in the right position but it was hit with such power and sweet timing that she had no hope. It reminded me of a strike from Ronaldo or one of the other very best male players.

Steph Catley is a good player for us. Very nice left foot and she is generally very good at crossing into the penalty area.

As a casual watcher of our teams we rarely have enough talented forwards to finish off the work upfield?
Nah, i think the Matildas are more like Richmond, we have one of the best strikers in the world, but we tend to bomb it in a bit too much, and lack a bit of system with our forward entries.

The Matildas were great last night, against a team that hadnt been challenged all tournament, but luck went against them, and perhaps they lacked abit of composure late- but they were playing on tired legs by then.
and it is worth keeping in mind the team had played 3 games together in over 12 months before the Olympics, and had a new coach.

Most of the squad should still be going strong at the Olympics.
And we should be very excited for the upcoming World Cup on Australian soil.
