What actually happened was that he went for a walk on GMBWTFISTHISSTADIUMCALLED and it was only when he got back into his hire car for the exciting drive back to Punt Road that he noticed the cat shiat he had got all over his shoes. Just confirmed the decision he had made two months earlier.

I would if I barracked for Geelong and all their supporters would abuse me and say what about Dangerfield anytime I mentioned Dustin.

yeah I've no problem that these people are considering the salary and term of contract when choosing their employment. Kinda normal.
The smart ones are factoring in club culture, playing at the G and playing alongside Dusty

1. Hopper’s management ( connors group, Robbie D’Arazio mainly) expected him to pick Geelong. There was a comment by one of them that alluded to that.
2. They were discussing the AFL CEO and Connors said Brendan Gale was still in with a chance for AFL CEO and “so he should be”. Hopper said that if he is going to Richmond he wants Gale there. A lot of respect for Benny.
3. Playing at the MCG was a big lure for him
4. There is massive respect for Blair Hartley in the industry

Hopper was pumped. It just showed me that the combination of great management and being a big club playing at the MCG makes us a place players want to go to.

Watched this too and the previous season.

It’s a pretty lame TV / doco outside my personal interest in AFL. I’m wasn’t left very impressed by the player managers either. I guess we don’t see what they have to really do but clearly a profession the mainly clips a ticket and provides some Lubricant where gears are a little rusty / provide emotional support to their players. I’m sure they work hard in this period of time though. They react to things and don’t know in advance but wear nice suits and eat at nice restaurants and have nice pictures in fancy offices.

I guess a player could negotiate for themselves but they would be at a fair knowledge disadvantage and also not have the freedom to talk to various list managers and coaches in the way an agent could. You have to wonder in their first couple of years where there wage is fixed how much value a manager could add though.

Agree with your hopper assessment. We get to see very little Richmond stuff in either series although watching sonsie have an emotional meltdown in series 1 thinking he wasn’t going to get picked was pretty insightful as to how he is wired.

Yeah fair assessment but I probably enjoyed it a bit more than you seem to. I guess what we don’t see is the help some players get with financial management and other such things. The thing that surprised me is the level of the role the managers play in the trade period with access to the clubs. I assume they are essentially being the player in that role.

The Sonsie one was interesting. I would assume he expected to get picked up earlier and my read was that he was really hanging out to be picked by us on the 2nd day (he was a Tiger fan from memory) and then all that relief just bubbled over. He is clearly a sensitive soul and that’s ok, everyone is different. His Manager said that he was one who was seen as a very high draft pick a year earlier and COVID and injury had pushed him down the pecking order.

The other part of that episode was the Johnson drafting and what seemed to have happened was that everyone was surprised he slid so far ( as were plenty on here) and that effected him a lot. What happened to him with getting an invite to the first night and then being the only one not drafted was pretty cruel really.

Hopper came across as a really engaging and likeable young man who was so pumped to be at the Tigers.

The Bowes one was telling as well. He turned down more money from both Eseendon and Hawthorn to go to the Cats and it all came down to him feeling wanted as a player rather than the club wanting the pick 7. It is not always about money

I was surprised Hopper was a Cats fan and he said “yeah, I love the Cats”. Makes it even more meritorious that he chose Richmond!

I remember that but I didn’t read it as he was a cats fan. I think he said “ I always had a liking for the cats” or something like that. Clearly his management team thought he pick the cats.
If we go back to when Prestia came to us I am pretty sure the demons were interested and his whole family were Melbourne supporters, his Dad still is. We tend to forget this is a career decision for these guys in the end.

Edit : just watched it again and D’Arazio said that Andrew Mackie will say “ You are the man” and Hopper said “ I’ve always loved the cats”. Not sure what that means exactly

I watched the whole game and Hopper was genuinely in practice match mode.

His body language meant it was a hit-out and nothing more. He'll be fine when the real stuff starts.

Lets cut the *smile*, Bowes was traded to clear up some cash. Take pick 7 out of the equation, no-one wouldve blinked. Why didn't GC trade 25 along with Rankine?? Because he can play!. That's why! Hawthorn & Essendon knew they could *smile* the 400k a yr down the drain for the next 4 yrs as long as they got there hands on pick 7.
We didn't move on it because Gale showed our recruiting team the list of 1st rounders and we pulled out quick smart.
I wouldve been traded if I had pick 7 stuck in the deal.
Bowes will be lucky to see out the next 4 yrs.
Stack not getting picked up is a disgrace considering how shiit WC are and Freo too. What do you expect from a club run by a smurf like Bell?

Not sure what that is all about ZIps. The only point I was making was that Bowes didn’t go to the highest bidder, he went to the club who he felt also believed he could play.

Apart from anything else we didn’t engage in the deal becauee we didn’t have salary cap space to pay his wage .

Nothing you said Sting.
It just gets me angry that a reserves grade footballer is all of sudden a super star because he went to Geelong.
In my eyes he us exactly like Markov without the huge salary

Not sure anyone is saying he is a superstar. He’s played well at times at AFL level.

Will have to wait and see
