Read somewhere that Geelol were offering Kelly $800k to stay. Where in $800k a year do you need help with a bit of extra assistance for your kids?

When you probably only have 3 or 4 years left of earning capacity. Once the footy is over, what's he going to do? His kids won't stop needing assistance just because he's finished playing footy.

I wonder how parents on $60,000 or less a year do it?

Isn't Kelly 25? Should have 6 or 7 years left in him. Apart from that, there's thousands of others on a *smile* load less money got kids with autism n they have to cope somehow.

Its hard mate. Speech therapy alone for my daughter is over $300 a session with multiple needed each month. Thats just speech for one child. Don't get me wrong I am not complaining as I know there are many, many more people who have it way way harder than we do.

Sure, and people on a whole lot more. I see nothing wrong with any AFL footballer trying to maximise their earning capacity while they play. It's a very short career span with no guarantees afterwards.

Plus Kelly has 2 kids with Autism, not one.

But it is irrelevent to what he earns as a player and the Cat's asking permission for under the table payment from the AFL is wrong in so many ways

I wasn't defending the cats, but not surprised they would ask for all sorts of favours while Hocking is there to grant them and Scooter isa there to justify it publicly.

Geelong tried ‘absolutely everything’ to keep Tim Kelly — including asking the AFL for help

Geelong tried ‘absolutely everything’ to keep star midfielder Tim Kelly, including pitching to the AFL for extra assistance outside the salary cap.

Kelly finally had his wish granted on Wednesday when Geelong traded him to West Coast in a deal that sent Picks 14, 24, 37 and a future first-round pick to the Cats in exchange for the 25-year-old, Pick 57 and a future third-round selection.

Cats CEO Brian Cook, who signed a contract extension on Wednesday that ties him to Kardinia Park until the end of 2021, has revealed the club asked the AFL for money to help support the Kelly family, who have two young children with autism.

Whatever respect I had for this club has disappated in the last few months, getting to be they're more & more like the entitled brats at Tullamabummerland.

Reported it’s for a 4th or 5th round pick.

So yes it’s peanuts.

Bit sad to see Dan go. What a strange collapse in just 1 year. Maybe there's some attitude problems in this as it looks like the club is virtually finding a new place for him (i.e. they want him to go, not he wanting to go)

Wonder if this trade could work.
Geelong IN: Jack Steven Out:pick 37
St Kilda IN: Dan Butler & Pick 41
Richmond IN: Pick 37

That way we have consecutive picks 37, 38 & 39

Yep Tim Kelly is fine. He doesn't need a top up nor did Geelong need an expanded salary cap. At 800,000 or whatever he is receiving he won't be struggling in the least, even with two autistic children. I have one autistic child and neither my wife or myself have any relatives in this country to help and we earn a fraction of what Tim Kelly does. But we do fine as the NDIS covers everything that we need in terms of therapy and intervention.

Moreover, without wishing to turn this thread into one about autism or autism services, unlike WA (where Kelly is returning) we have in Melbourne five specialist public schools (both primary and secondary) for autistic children. On the face of it it would appear a very odd move for him to want to move back to Perth if it's solely about his kids. But that's the point I guess, he is rich enough (or will be shortly) not to worry about considerations like that. Again he is more than fine.
